IAMP Scientific Meeting & General Assembly 2010

The 3rd General Assembly of IAMP and Scientific Meeting will be held in Malaysia from 9 till 11 June 2010 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, hosted generously by the Academy of Sciences Malaysia.

The Inter Academy Medical Panel (IAMP) is an association of the world's medical academies and a global network of academies of science and medicine, committed to work together through bilateral and regional linkages to improve health world-wide.

The General Assembly is expected to be attended by 67 societies which are the members of IAMP.

The Academy of Sciences Malaysia is an independent, statutory body of eminent scientists, engineers, technologists and industrialists of various disciplines with the objective of pursuing, encouraging and enhancing excellence in the fields of science, engineering and technology for the development of the nation and the benefit of mankind.

“The event will provide a unique forum for science academies and health policy and science experts to discuss the various issues associated with local and global health.In particular, the meeting will consider the definition of future targets and indicators, with special reference to the needs of different countries, and the way in which science can support this process.

This General Assembly comes at a challenging and important time for the IAMP. We will be renewing the Executive Committee as the terms of three of our members come to a close and we will be electing a new co-chair as Guy de Thé completes his distinguished term of service.

The new leadership team that emerges from these elections will be charged with the vital task of bringing IAMP fully and actively into the global arena, and, drawing on its distinguished member academies to serve as an important source of expertise on health and science policy to the global community and an organization that can strengthen existing academies and support the development of new academies to serve their own countries.

Later this month we will be calling for nominations to the Executive Committee and for the position of co-chair and it is our hope that we will receive numerous proposals. We will also be circulating revised drafts of our statutes and the rules of procedure for your comments.

Dear Friends,

It is my pleasure as host of the IAMP Scientific Meeting and 3rd General Assembly to invite IAMP members, medical researchers and medical practitioners as well as policy makers and other professionals all over the globe to participate in the IAMP Scientific Meeting and 3rd General Assembly which will be held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia from 9-11 June, 2010.

Kuala Lumpur, or "KL" as it is commonly known, is the focal point of Malaysia. The city's bustling streets, its shining, modern office towers, and its cosmopolitan air project an unbounded spirit of progress and symbolize Malaysia's unhesitating leap into the future. The city also brings together Malaysia's past and present, its many constituent cultures, and even its remarkable natural treasures, allowing first-time visitors an invaluable opportunity to see Malaysia as a whole before setting off to explore its parts. Kuala Lumpur provides the perfect venue for the IAMP Scientific Meeting and 3rd General Assembly in the 10th year of the IAMP’s efforts to improve healthcare worldwide.

The IAMP Scientific Meeting and 3rd General Assembly will be an excellent opportunity to strengthen ties among IAMP members, both from the developing and developed countries. The Scientific Meeting expects to welcome around 300 representatives of medical institutions, research institutions, academies and governmental authorities. For IAMP members, the 3rd General Assembly will provide a platform to discuss the future role of IAMP in the global arena in particular to as an important source of expertise and evidence-based advice on health and science policy to Governments and the global community.

The theme of the IAMP Scientific Meeting, “Global Collaboration for Local Health Action”, reflects IAMP’s call for action to make “Improving Health a Global Priority” and recognizes the crucial role of informed, concerted and coordinated efforts across the global and at local levels if improving health is to gain the attention and priority needed. The Scientific Meeting will provide numerous opportunities for participants to gain new information and strategies, to strengthen current networks and build new ones, to share their own knowledge and experiences and to become actively engaged in the global health movement.
