Academician Tan Sri Datuk Dr Yusof Basiron FASc

Tan Sri Datuk Dr Yusof Basiron FASc obtained his Bachelor Degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Canterbury, New Zealand in 1972, and he completed his Post- Graduate Degree in Rubber Technology (ANCRT) in the United Kingdom in 1974. In 1976, he finished his Master Degree in Engineering specializing in Industrial Management (M.E) and also in Business Administration (MBA) from the Catholic University of Leuven in Belgium. In 1986, he completed his doctorate with a PhD in Applied Economics and Management Science from the University of Stirling Scotland.

He began his career with the Rubber Research Institute (RRI)/ Malaysian Rubber Research Development Board (MRRDB) as Robber Technologist/ Techno-Economist. Then in 1979, he was the first Malaysian scientist appointed to Palm Oil Research Institute of Malaysia (PORIM) and was appointed as divisional director at age 32. He was later appointed as the Director General of PORIM in 1992 at a young age of 43. He held the position for 8 years until April 2000 before assuming the role of the Director-General of Malaysian Palm Oil Board (MPOB).

Contributions in areas of science, engineering and technology

Tan Sri Yusof was involved in developing PORIM and later MPOB from zero bases to become a renowned research institute for the palm oil industry. He established a comprehensive research and development system at PORIM/ MPOB, dedicated to supporting a fast growing palm oil industry. The R&D system enable palm oil applications to be expanded, palm oil quality to be improved and its market to be expended, thus increasing process and export revenue.

Systems for patents and royalties, technology transfer and project competition ad publications were developed and made operational. He also established research facilities in the form of well equipped research laboratories in different divisions, acquisition and development of regional research stations and experimental plantations and 6 overseas representative offices for technical advisory work. Thus, MPOB was the first to have well equipped genetic engineering facilities and advanced oleo chemical laboratory facilities in the country.

Tan Sri Yusof has 83 publications as cited in Google scholar search, including 26 patents. The most successful patented products co-authored include the “Continuous Sterilization Palm Oil Mill” which has been successfully commercialized, with sales over RM300 million per year by the vendor CBIP Berhad. Under his supervision and innovative thinking has resulted to many discoveries. For example, discovery of palm phenolics, discovery of palm with over 3000ppm of carotenes compared with the normal 700ppm and enable plantations without seed gardens to produce their own oil palm seeds quickly.

During crisis management due to palm oil low prices, Tan Sri Yusof has put a lot of effort in recovered the palm oil price as markets sentiments improved subsequently. Combined with another innovation of forced replanting suggested and implemented by Tan Sri in 2001, the depressed palm oil price recovers, and the industry and country reaped billion ringgits of additional export revenue.

At international level, Tan Sri Datuk Dr Yusof is frequently invited to speak at international seminars all over the world e.g. NIOP, AOCS, POTS and at International Conference in Indonesia and Malaysia, the two largest producers of palm oil. He was awarded Lifetime achievement Award by BURSA Malaysia in 2008 for international contribution in palm oil market and price developments.

During his tenure as ASM President, Tan Sri Yusof introduced a number of significant initiatives. Among them are the Top Research Scientists Malaysia, the Mega Science Framework Study (2011-2050) ASM International Conference (ASMIC), and the establishment of Mahathir Science Award Foundation. ASM under his leadership has also successfully managed to obtain land for its office premise to enable ASM to have its own building in future.

Professor Dr Awg Bulgiba Awg Mahmud FASc

Professor Dr Awg Bulgiba is an outstanding public health physician, with immense contributions to clinical epidemiology and evidence-based medicine research in Malaysia and the first Malaysian doctor to gain a PhD in Health Informatics. He served in the Ministry of Health (MOH), Malaysia in various capacities from 1988 to 1997. He developed a keen interest in health informatics and helped to develop the Public Health Institute's computer network and facilities.

His interest in this field further flourished when he joined the Department of Social and Preventive Medicine, UM (1998) as a lecturer, and was promoted as Head of the department (2006). During his tenure, he spearheaded the revamp of the Master of Public Health programme, introduced the Doctor of Public Health degree and set up two outstanding research centres in the department — the Julius Centre UM and Centre for Population Health. In recognition of his interest in Health Informatics, Dr Awg Bulgiba was appointed as manager of the University of Malaya Medical Centre (UMMC) IT Unit in July 2000 while still holding his job as a lecturer. He was appointed as Deputy Dean of the Medical Faculty, UM (2009-2011), Director of the Global Planning and Strategy Centre, UM (2011 – 2012).

He was appointed as an Associate Editor for the Asia Pacific Journal of Public Health and Malaysian Orthopaedic Journal as well as an International Advisory Board member for the Journal of Experimental & Clinical Medicine. He is also a statistical reviewer for numerous medical journals, namely the Asia-Pacific Journal of Public Health, International Journal of Cardiology, The Lancet, Journal of Healthcare Engineering and Medical Journal of Malaysia and sits on numerous national level committees.

Professor Dr Khor Geok Lin FASc

Professor Dr Khor Geok Lin is recognized for her contributions in public health nutrition. She is the resource expert of the Nutrition Division, Ministry of Health. As the Chairman of the Technical Working Group for Training, she has been playing a key role in translating research findings into training. She has played a significant role in shaping the country’s nutrition policy and programme towards achieving the National Plan of Action for Nutrition (NPAN). Besides, she also has contributed actively to the food and nutrition industry in applying research findings to education and promotion of health and nutrition.

As a Professor of Nutrition of almost 15 years, she has dedicated herself as a teacher, mentor, supervisor and external examiner of numerous undergraduates and graduates, not only in Malaysia but also in the region. In the international arena, she has contributed her expertise into building capacity in nutrition and public health, through her involvement as Scientific Advisor, International Life Sciences Institute, Southeast Asia (2003-present), Member of the World Food Program Technical Advisory Group (since 2004) and Member of Danone Baby Nutrition Asia Pacific Scientific Advisory Board (since 2010). 

She is the Honorary Chief Editor for the Malaysian Journal of Nutrition (since 2000, Member of the Editorial Board of the Bulletin of the National Nutrition Institute of the Arab Republic of Egypt (since 2006), Member of the Editorial Board of International Journal of Food and Science Nutrition (since 2010) and Member of Editorial Board of Nutrition Reviews (since 2012). 

She has received numerous awards namely Achievement Award for Research and Publications, IMU (2012), Outstanding Members Award, Nutrition Society of Malaysia (2010), Recognition Award, International Life Sciences Institute, Southeast Asia (2010) and Asia Pacific Clinical Nutrition Society (AOCNS) Award (2004).

Professor Dr Mustafa Ali Mohd FASc

Professor Dr Mustafa Ali Mohd FASc

Professor Dr Mustafa Ali Mohd is known for his work on endocrine disruptors and environmental toxicology. He pioneered the Shimadzu-UMMC Centre for Xenobiotic Studies (SUCXeS), a smart partnership with Shmadzu Corporation, Japan. The centre has brought in more than RM15 Million of funding and continues to serve as a referral centre in analytical techniques for clinical, biomedical, environmental and toxicological testing for Malaysia and the region. He is also an authority in mass spectrometry and chromatography. The most significant contribution by him is the assessment of the Bisphenol A found in babies’ feeding bottles, babies food and food products, which ultimately led to the ban of Bisphenol A in Malaysia and many other countries worldwide including Canada and France.

He sits as advisory committee for several high level decision making bodies at international level, especially in the area of food safety and quality at the World Health Organisation (WHO). He coordinates several international training programs on analytical techniques, chemical hazards and environmental pollution and acts as the project coordinator as well as trainer for the United Nations University (Japan) Environmental Monitoring programme: Technology transfer-in East Asia region, since 1998. He is a member of the long-range research initiatives of the Japan Chemical Society and American Chemical Council and was also a visiting scientist of Kyoto University, Japan. He acts as an advisor to the Ministry of Health, Malaysia in food quality control division and drinking water quality division. 

Professor Mustafa’s publications ranged from books, refereed journals and research reports which builds his current H index to 16 with more than 1000 citations. In 2012, he was selected as one of the Top Research Scientist Malaysia (TRSM) for his outstanding achievements and performances in research.

Professor Ir Dr Abd Halim Shamsuddin FASc

Professor Ir Dr Abd Halim is recognized in the area of fuel and energy, as well as renewable energy. As the Director of the Centre for Renewable Energy (CRE) UNITEN, he has managed to develop a strong research team in renewable energy and attracting funding of RM 17million for 17 projects from various agencies and industry during the period 2009-2012. In recognition of this success, in March 2012, CRE was officially upgraded from college-level research centre to university-level research institute. 

He served as Director (Non-Executive), Renewable Resources Technology Management Sdn. Bhd (2008-2010), Head of Innovation Unit, UKM Holdings Sdn Bhd (2004-2006), Deputy Director (Innovation), Research Management Centre, UKM (2004-2004), Dean, Faculty of Engineering, UKM (1994-2000), Chairman, Board of Directors, Advanced Engineering Centre, UKM (1996-2000) and Head, Department of Mechanical & Materials Engineering, UKM (1985-1990). Currently he is the Chairman of Energy Institute Malaysia. 

He is also active in national committees and professional bodies. He is currently the Chairman of the Energy Institute Malaysia, branch of the Energy Institute UK. He is also a member, ISO-TC238 Solid Biofuel, International Standards Organization ISO, chairman of the National Mirror Committee of the ISO-TC238, and member of International Steering Committee, World Renewable Congress IX 2010, Abu Dhabi. 

He has received numerous awards for his excellent achievements in research and management namely Voted Best Lecturer in Faculty of Engineering, UKM (Academic Session 1987/88), Commonwealth Academic Staff Fellowship Award (1990), Energy Institute Shell Travel Fellowship (1999), Guest Professorship at Gerhard-Mercator University Duisburg Germany (Funded by DAAD) (2001) and Silver Medal, Geneva International Exhibition on Invention and Innovation (2002).

Professor Dr Abdul Latif Ahmad FASc

Professor Dr Abdul Latif Ahmad is an expert in wastewater treatment and membrane technology. For the past 16 years, he set as a benchmark in his research area internationally and nationally. Among one of his most prominent research inventions is the development of ‘Sustainable development of palm oil mill with zero discharge using membrane technology’. It has been classified as of national interest and is the first of its kind in the world. 

Professor Dr Abdul Latif successful achievements are well reflected in his professional body membership and various awards conferred to him, namely the Award of Leading Engineer of the World 2003 and in 2012, he has been selected as one of the 2012 Top Research Scientist Malaysia (TRSM). In addition, he was the only Asian recipient of the Saudi Arabia Prince Sultan Bin Abdul Aziz International Prize for Water, in 2006, and the recipient of the 20th Khwarizmi International Award for Outstanding Research Achievement 2007, the Novel Engineering Solutions Award 2008, the Toray Science and Technology Award 2008, the Rotary Research Gold Medal Award 2012 and the TWAS (The World Academy of Sciences) Prize 2012 (Engineering Sciences). He has published more than 250 articles in high impact factor international refereed journals, (h index = 33, no of citation = 4040). 

Apart being an active researcher, he has also contributed in the administrative at USM. He served as Dean of School of Chemical Engineering from 2005-2010. Under his leadership, the faculty was ranked among the top 20 faculties in Asia and top 100 faculties worldwide, according to the QS world universities ranking. He is also an academic assessor/Honorary Auditor for IChemE.

Professor Dato' Dr Kamaruzzaman Sopian FASc

Professor Dato’ Dr Kamaruzzaman Sopian is an expert in renewable energy technology and he has been involved in this field for more than 25-years. His main contributions are in solar radiation modeling and resource assessment, advanced solar photovoltaic systems (grid-connected photovoltaic, solar powered regenerative fuel cell, solar hydrogen production, thin film silicon solar cell) and advanced solar thermal systems (solar cooling, solar heat pump, solar assisted drying, combined photovoltaic thermal or hybrid collector). He has published over 700 research papers in journals and conferences (SCOPUS h index = 20, no. of citation = 1322) (Google Scholar h index = 26, no of citation = 2870). He is also the associate editor of the Journal of Renewable Energy and Journal of Sustainable Cities and Society published by Elsevier Ltd. 

Dr Kamaruzzaman has won several international awards for his academic contribution in renewable energy including the IDB (Islamic Development Bank) S&T Prize 2013, World Renewable Energy Network Pioneer Award 2012, ASEAN Energy Awards (2005, 2007 and 2013). He has 2 patents, 20 patents pending, 6 copyrights, and 1 trademark for his innovation in renewable energy technology. He won over 90 medals in national and international innovation and invention competitions including special innovation awards such Prix de L 'Environment by the Swiss Society for Environmental Protection, 2001, Geneva, Special Prize, Korea Invention Promotion Association, INPEX Pittsburgh 2008 and Sustainable Environment Award, INNOVA 2008, Brussels. 

He has also undertaken the task of developing the first roadmap for Renewable Energy Technology for Malaysia funded by MOSTI and MIGHTS. Moreover, he has undertaken assignments in about 10 countries for international agencies and programs such as UNDP-GEF, UNIDO, ASEAN EU-Energy Facility, ASEAN-Australia Economic Co-operation Program, ASEAN-CIDA, JSPS-VCC, British Council CHICHE, ISESCO and UNESCO related to renewable energy technology.

Professor Dr Hamdani Saidi FASc

Professor Dr Hamdani is a known for his pioneering research and development in membrane technology in Malaysia. He started his teaching career as an Assistant Lecturer at UTM in 1977, and was later appointed as Head of the Petroleum Engineering Department in 1982. He was promoted as Deputy Dean (1983-1984 & 1988-1991). During his tenure as Deputy Dean, he established Membrane Research Unit (MRU) in 1990 and started the development of membranes and their applications in process industry. Today, MRU is recognized as the reference centre attracting significant amounts of research grants from the government and industry, developing expertise and products on water purifications, gas separation, and Fuel Cell development, as well as contributing new knowledge. 

He served as Dean of the Faculty of Chemical and Natural Resources Engineering (1992-1997). He is also the Founder of the UTM Institute of Hydrogen Economy and was appointed as Dean, UTM Energy Research Alliance (2008-2010). 

Professor Hamdani has contributed his expertise to the industry, government and international organizations. He served as the chairman of National sub-committee on Hydrogen, under the Ministry of Energy, Water and Communication (2003-2008). He is also a technical consultant to Pusat Tenaga Malaysia (2002-2008) and involves in the planning and implementation of Energy R&D. At the international arena, he has been appointed as a member of the Council of Energy Advisor, Gerson Lehman Group, USA and Malaysia’s representative to Partnership for Advancing the Transition to Hydrogen (PATH), USA. 

His research findings are widely published in journals, books, proceedings, manuscripts and technical reports nationally and internationally. (H index = 37, no of citation = 6852).

Ir Mohd Adnan Mohd Nor

Ir Mohd Adnan Mohd Nor is known within and beyond the engineering fraternity as a competent professional engineer and resource management specialist in his area, water resources development and management. One of the successful projects led by him was the development of a practical and holistic approach in implementing the complex Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) and Integrated River Basin Management (IRBM) concept for Sungai Perak. The plan has been approved and adopted by the Government of Perak and a Public-Private Sector agreement to implement the masterplan has been signed. 

He is also known as an advocate of the applications and advancement of Science, Technology and Innovations in developing policies and for the advancement of the engineering profession. With his professional and personal reputations, he has been invited as member in several committees, namely Chair of the Water and Agriculture Task Force of the ASM, Member of the Water Demand Management Task Force of the ASM, a Member of the Examinations and Qualifications Committee of the Board of Engineers Malaysia (E&Q BEM), a Member of the Professional Services Development Committee, CIDB, Honorary Secretary of the Association of Registered Engineers for Disaster Relief Malaysia (RedR Malaysia) and an Industry Panel Member of the Ministry of Higher Education and Universities (UNITEN and UniMAP). He is also actively involved internationally. He is a member of the Executive Committee of the International Federation of Consulting Engineers for Asia Pacific Region (FIDIC/ASPAC) and a Vice President of the Federation of Consultants from Islamic Countries (FCIC). 

Over the period of his career, he has presented papers at local and international platforms, which includes more than 50 technical and seminar papers on various subjects especially in the field of water resources development and management.

Professor Dr Fatimah Md Yusoff FASc

Professor Dr Fatimah is well-respected among peers and has extensive skills in teaching and research in the fields of aquatic ecology and aquaculture. She has published wisely in prestigious journals and more than 200 of her publications appear in journals, proceedings and chapters in books, both locally and abroad. (H index = 16, no. of citation = 884). Her research networks spans across Asia, as well as Europe and USA. Some of her research findings have been patented. She has received many prestigious awards at national and international levels for her research work. 

She is also a well-known as consultant in aquatic ecosystem management, fisheries and aquaculture, and has served many agencies, both from the Government and private sectors. Due to her expertise in aquatic environmental management, she also serves as advisor and panel assessor to various environmental impact assessment projects. In terms of academia, she acts as external examiner to theses, graduate committee co-supervisor (University of Adelaide; University of Wageningen), proposal assessor, and promotion assessor, in local and international institutions. 

Dr Fatimah’s contribution at community level is notable especially her contribution as Council Member (1989–1994; 2000–2004; 2009–2014), Treasurer (1989-1994; 2004- 2006), Secretary (1995-1997), Vice-President (2000–2002) and President (2002 – 2004) of Malaysia Fisheries Society. She is also actively involved in Asian Fisheries Society and serves as Council Member (2001-2011) and Treasurer (2007-2011).

Professor Dr Ng Wing Keong FASc

Professor Dr Ng Wing Keong has made major contributions in the field of aquaculture. His discovery on the bioavailability of endogenous vitamins from feed ingredients used in fish diet formulations was the first to be published in scientific literature and have contributed to the production of more cost-effective feeds through reducing the use of synthetic vitamin premixes. In Asia, his research on the use of oil palm-based products in fish feeds is well known throughout both the scientific and feed industry communities. His research team was the first in the world to show that vitamin E (especially tocotrienols) extracted from palm oil were deposited in fish tissues leading to enhanced oxidative stability and flesh quality. 

His successful research had led to several prestigious recognitions such as Silver Medal Biolnno Awards 2008, Eureka Gold Medal 2007, awarded by the 56th World Exhibition of Innovation Research & New Technologies, Brussels, and IENA Gold Medal 2007, awarded by the International Trade Fair "Ideas-Inventions-New Products" Nuremberg, Germany. 

He serves numerous editorial board including 8 international journals, 2 international trade magazines and 3 other local publications. To date, he has reviewed more than 200 manuscripts for over 30 different journals from all over the world. Recognition from international aquaculture-based organizations has resulted in his appointment as a consultant to the Network of Aquaculture Centres in Asia-Pacific and with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO, Italy) for their various global initiatives on aquaculture. He was also invited by the Government of India to help in their initiatives to commercialize aqua feed research.

Dr Saw Leng Guan FASc

Dr Saw Leng Guan FASc

Dr Saw Leng Guan is a world expert on the genus Licuala (palms). He began his career as Hill Forest Silviculturist at FRIM in 1982, and later worked as botanist in 1985. He was promoted as Senior Research officer (1990), Deputy Director of Forest Environment Division (2002), Programme Director, Tropical Forest Biodiversity Centre (2004) and as Director of Forest Biodiversity Division (2009-present).

During his tenure as Head of the Botany and Biodiversity Programme of FRIM, he was responsible for the development of the Kepong Botanic Garden, the Tree Flora of Sabah and Sarawak (the first effort to document the trees of Sabah and Sarawak) and the Flora of Peninsular Malaysia (stock-taking of the plants of Peninsular Malaysia, to replace the Flora of the Malay Peninsula by HN Ridley in the 1920s). His work in documenting these plants is expected to assist Malaysian botany to be at the forefront of tropical botany at the next two decades.

In biodiversity area, Dr Saw is a key advisor to the Ministry of Natural Resources in UN negotiations and a key driver in conservation studies in FRIM. Dr Saw has published 51 papers in scientific journals, co-authored 5 books and contributed chapters in 23 other books. He discovered and named 57 new species of trees, palms, gingers and orchids. In recognition of his research work, he received the FRIM Best Research Award (1997 and 1999).

Professor Dr Mohd Tajuddin Abdullah FASc

Professor Dr Mohd Tajuddin is well-recognized as mammalogist with great interest in both the taxonomy and ecology of mammals, especially bats and small non-volant mammals. His specialty is to combine traditional taxonomy with molecular evidences in understanding the mode and tempo of evolution and biogeographic patterns.

From his research findings, over 65 materials were catalogued by international databases and Google Book and FAO. He has registered over 300 DNA sequences species of bats in the NCBI GenBank, some of which could be described as new genetic species. He has written and co-authored over 150 articles as books, monograph, chapters, journals, proceedings and articles in magazines; and has presented it at more than 40 international and national conferences and over 20 webpages. He has completed over 10 consultations projects and served as government reviewer for more than 15 EIA projects.

Apart from research work, Dr Mohd Tajuddin is also actively involved in administration and management. He served as Program Coordinator Faculty of Resource Science and Technology (FRST), UNIMAS (2000 – 2005), the Founding Head of the Department of Zoology, FRST, UNIMAS (2006-2009), Founding Dean, Center for Pre-University Studies, UNIMAS (2009-2010), Director Zoo Melaka, Department of Wildlife and National Park (DWNP) (1992-1993), Chairman of Science and Technology Panel, UNIMAS (since 2009) and Chief Editor of the Borneo Journal of Science and Technology (since 2012). He has received eight certificates of excellence in service from UNIMAS, DWNP and MOSTI as reflection of his competent leadership role.

His research work has generated more than 50 post graduate students, over 350 research papers in high impact journals, proceedings and conferences nationally and internationally with 5 patents. Lipase enzyme and astaxanthin production, Fermsostat system and the Continuous Enzymatic Deinking Pilot System are among the highlights of his research work. He authored 12 academic books on Microbiology and Biotechnology, entitling him to receive the Language Award in scientific writing by the Malaysian Linguistic Society-Public Bank. He is the founder and member of the International Advisory Board of the Malaysian Journal of Microbiology (MJM). He serves as the Advisory Board Member of the Asian Federation of Biotechnology (AFOB) and editorial member for 8 international journals.

As a researcher, he has networked with 13 universities abroad and he is a recipient of the UNESCO Fellowship, Commonwealth ACU Fellowship, JSPS, ADB, GBF, MIRCEN UNESCO and the Malaysian-Hungary Fellowship. He has received numerous research awards for his excellent achievements such as Henry Goh Environmental Award (2004), Gold Medal and Jury Award (Brussel, 2006), ECO-International Federation of Inventors Association Award, Germany (2009), Gold Medal-International Invention, Innovation and Industrial Design Technology Award (I-Tex 2004, 2005, 2006, 2008), IENA Nuremburg (2009) and Excellent Scientist Award (MOHE), 2005.

Professor Dr Norani Muti Mohamed is known for her contribution in the field of thin film technology, semiconductor technology and nanotechnology. She began her career as a lecturer at Universiti Sains Malaysia in 1984. In 2001, she continued her career as an associate Professor at the Department of Electrical & Electronic Engineering, Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS. In 2005, she was appointed as the Head of Cluster (sensory system) and later as the Director of Mission Oriented Research for Nanotechnology at UTP.

Nationally, she has been actively involved in several committees related to nanotechnology. She is a committee member of Malaysian Nanotechnology Association and National Nanotechnology Directorate. She established the “Centre of Innovative Nanostructures and Nanodevices (COINN)” at UTP with the objective of developing a library of nanomaterials and synthesis techniques for accelerated production of innovative and beneficial commercialized products. During her tenure as the director, COINN was awarded with the status of NanoMalaysia COE (2011-2015) based on its continuous R&D effort in nanotechnology, focusing on renewable energy. The centre has managed to attract RM30 millions of grants and involved in the development of nanostructured photo electrode material for dye solar cell, nanocatalysts for fuel production and other functional devices.

Research undertaken by Professor Dr Norani is very much focused on cutting edge research areas ranging from novel materials with innovative nanostructures to novel devices. She has maintained strong relationship between research and technological applications that had resulted in patents of new nanotechnology based inventions which can be developed up to product level. She is also actively involved in International Organization of Standardization in Nanotechnologies (ISO/TC229) as the technical expert and as the chairman of working group 2 (WG2: measurement and characterization) in Malaysia.

Dr Mazlan Madon is a technical authority in the field of geology, with 29 years of working experience in the petroleum industry. His main areas of specialisation are Basin Analysis and Sedimentology. Through his management and technical leadership, he has contributed significantly to the professional development and training of geoscientists in exploration and research. His research on sedimentary rocks and basins has contributed to the petroleum exploration and development activities of PETRONAS at national and international levels.

His scientific achievements include technical publications at national and international levels on key topics relevant to industrial applications. He has written many technical papers on geology, sedimentology, and petroleum geology. The highlight of his scientific achievement is the 665-page book “Petroleum Geology and Resources of Malaysia” which gives a detailed description of the geology of the petroleum basins of Malaysia and has become an important reference for students and professional petroleum geologists in the country and abroad.

Dr Mazlan is also actively involved in various committees, through his long involvement in the Geological Society of Malaysia. He has been a Life Member of the Society since 1992, served as Council Member for several terms (1991/1992, 1998/1999, 2009/2010) and was elected Vice President in 2010. During the period 1997 to 1999, he also served as Council member and Chairman of Oil & Gas Technical Committee of the Institute of Geology Malaysia. He is an active member of American Association of Petroleum Geologist and is a representative to its Asia-Pacific House of Delegates.

In 2012, Dr Mazlan was elected to the Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf (CLCS) for a five-year term 2012-2017, based at the UN Headquarters in New York. In his capacity as member of CLCS, he also provides advice to the National Committee on Continental Shelf.

Dr Low Kwai Sim is recognized for her contributions in the area of scientific hydrology and the environment, particularly in connection with water quality management, water resources planning, integrated water resources and river basin management and planning. She is the first scientific hydrologist in the country and is involved in the curriculum development of programmes from Bachelor to PhD levels on hydrology and the environment for the arts, science, geology and engineering students. She developed the Masters Course on Environmental Management in Universiti Malaya, and facilitated the development of the Masters Course on Integrated Water Resources Management with other universities and NGOs, with the Course now being provided in the Open University in Malaysia for local and international students.

After her retirement from Universiti Malaya (1991-1998), she joined the Asia Pacific Environmental Consultants Sdn Bhd (ASPEC) and now serves as its Director. She has completed a lot of consulting work, and facilitated work on water resources management and planning in ASEAN, Timor Leste and the Southern African countries. She also led and became a Principal Investigator for UNESCO for many studies and projects related to her field.

Dr Low contributed her knowledge and expertise in numerous scientific societies nationally and internationally. She has served as Advisor to the Malaysian Water Partnership (MyWP) (2005-present) and MyCBNet, Member and Facilitator of Global Water Partnership (GWP), South East Asian Technical Advisory Committee (SEATAC) (2000-2009), as well as Focal Point for the Global Water Partnership Toolbox for ASEAN, South Asia and China. (2001-2009) and SEACapNet (2002 – 2007). She is now the Chairman of AguaJaring SEA, a regional capacity building and development network for the Southeast Asian region, affiliated to the international Cap-NetUNDP. After serving the Drainage and Irrigation Department for 17 years, he ventured into the private sectors and acquired vast expertise in the application of appropriate type of cement and concrete for the construction industry. He has introduced the application of blended cement for the construction industry namely, masonry cement, blast-furnace slag cement, fly-ash cement and sulphate resisting Portland cement as well as application of carbon and glass fiber for strengthening of reinforced concrete structure elements. Besides, he also successfully introduced the use of PP Fibers into concrete for crack reduction properties and later carbon fibre for strengthening of concrete and steel structure.

Ir Choo also contributed his knowledge and expertise in numerous scientific organizations nationally and internationally. He is the Board Member of the Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM) and Board of Architect Malaysia (BAM). He was appointed as advisor to Chairman of Governing Board, International Science, Technology and Innovation Centre (ISTIC) and Founding Fellow of the ASEAN Academy of Engineering and Technology. In 1990, he established the Vertitech Group of Companies that provided specialized engineering services for the appraisal and rehabilitation of buildings and engineering structure.

Ir Choo has received many national and international awards and recognitions. He was a recipient of the 2010 ASEAN Outstanding Engineering Achievement Award and 1st Class Friendship Medal from Royal Cambodian Government in 2002.

Puan Fadilah Baharin has made outstanding contributions to the social, cultural and economic development of standards. Besides developing standards as governed under the Standards of Malaysia Act 1996 under the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI), she has extensive experience in promoting the Malaysian standards and accredits organizations engaged in testing, calibration, inspection and certification.

Puan Fadilah began her career as Research Officer at the Atomic Energy Licensing Board (AELB) in 1985. She was later appointed as Head of Malaysian Science & Technology Information Centre (MASTIC) in 1994 and returned to the AELB as Director of Licensing Division in 1998. She was appointed as Director of Standards, Department of Standards Malaysia in 2000 and was promoted as Director General in 2006. She was instrumental in coordinating various experts' contribution to the standardization committees which involved both ISO and non-ISO work such as the International Electro technical Commission and European Committee for standardization.

Puan Fadilah involved in various technical committees such as Member of the Halal Steering Committee under the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (JAKIM), Chair of the National Mirror Committee of the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade, Chairperson of the National Mirror Committee of the ASEAN Consultative Committee for Standards and Quality and Vice Chair for the Malaysia National Standards Committee.

She also serves as the Council Member for the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) (2013-2014); Member to the ISO DEVCO CAG (Chair's Advisory Group) (2013-2014) and Co-Chair of the ASEAN-Japan Comprehensive Economic Partnership, Sub-Committee on Standards, Technical Regulations and Conformity Assessment Procedures. She acts as spokesperson in more than 20 International meetings of the ISO. One of her major achievements is the establishment of the first Malaysian Standards, MS 1500 on halal food in 2004, which now many OIC countries have adopted.

Dr Amir Hashim is a rubber latex technologist. He is the former in providing the understanding of reduction of latex allergy and residual chemicals in gloves and the latter providing cost reduction in glove manufacturing.

He was among one of the earliest to recognize the effective reduction of allergenic proteins of NR latex gloves by dry leaching process. Currently, dry leaching process is a requirement in every medical glove manufacturer’s line to reduce allergenic protein from NR exam gloves. Another area of his R&D finding that is being referred extensively by the industry is the application of filler as cheapener in medical glove. His study on the biodegradability of natural rubber latex gloves has been well cited by the industry in the promoting of the natural rubber gloves as environmental friendly.

Since joining the Latex Science and Technology Division of the Rubber Research Institute Malaysia (1989), Dr Amir has excelled himself as latex technologist responding to the needs of the glove manufacturing industry in Malaysia. The latex products such as medical gloves, condoms, mattresses, industry in Malaysia have benefited from the fundamental research work conducted by Dr Amir and his team.

Dr Amir plays a pivoted role in linking the private sector to the government research institutions. He regularly conducts courses on latex science and technology for the private sector and serves as project supervisor for a few local universities. He has played significant role in charting the strategy for the upgrading and sustainability of the rubber product industry in Malaysia. He is also active in standards writing for latex products both locally and internationally. He is the Convener of the working group of glove and other latex products of ISO TC 45. He has published more than 100 research papers in refereed Journal, conferences and seminars.
