Introduction
The Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI) and the Academy of Sciences Malaysia (ASM) aim to ensure the vitality of the human resource base of science and technology in Malaysia.

The Ministry and the Academy champions the importance of fundamental research to build scientific knowledge and achieve excellence in science, generate discovery of new knowledge and become producers of technology rather than merely consumers.

Scientific Advancement Fund Allocation (SAGA) under the Nobel Prize Program - 8th Malaysia Plan, aims to enhance and develop human resource and knowledge in fundamental sciences. The SAGA is highly competitive and aims to consolidate research activities in prioritized areas. An initial amount of RM 20 million under the 8th Malaysia Plan was allocated to initiate this programme.

SAGA funding is meant for FUNDAMENTAL RESEARCH only.

Short-term Objectives
The short-term objectives are as follows:
• To promote and emphasize the importance of fundamental research in prioritized areas.
• To encourage advancement in fundamental science research.
• To develop the human capital in fundamental sciences.
• To enhance collaboration between research groups in priority areas in the country.

Long-term Objectives
The initiative is targeted to achieve the following objectives by the year 2020:
• To develop the human resource of scientists of international stature in fundamental sciences.
• To produce scientists in the clusters of Physics (including mathematics or computational science), Chemistry, Physiology or Medicine who would be capable of conducting research in new areas (novel) with international collaboration and linkages.
• To create Centres of Excellence in Fundamental Research in the 3 clusters in its identified priority areas. The centres are to be created through virtual networking of selected laboratories.  

Eligibility
This fund is open to all full-time academic staff/scientists of universities, research institutions or colleges (institutes of higher learning) and research laboratories in Malaysia who are employed on a permanent or contractual basis in the Government and private sector. The period of service for a researcher must be valid during the period of research proposed. Please enclose CVs of all researchers involved in the proposed research. The format for CV should contain information such as Personal Data, Relevant Education, Research Affiliations, Research Awards and Research Publications.
