2022 ACADEMY OF SCIENCES MALAYSIA ANNUAL REPORT

CHANGEMAKER
We may be a droplet but a droplet is what it takes to create ripples.
Together we create waves of change.
Concept
The ripples represent ASM’s way forward in becoming the Changemaker, where a droplet can create a ripple affecting those around it. Here, ASM is the droplet, and we will create the waves of change and inspire others to create a better world.

PROUDLY SERVING THE NATION:
REFLECTIONS
ASMA ISMAIL
ASM has achieved great success this year, proving to be the nation’s leading think tank for STIE. Despite facing numerous challenges, ASM has delivered outstanding results to its stakeholders, showcasing its expertise in providing excellent services. By exploring different approaches and taking advantage of opportunities, ASM has contributed significantly to the country and its people’s growth and development.
Since its inception on 1 February 1995, ASM, under the purview of MOSTI has consistently worked hard to achieve its goals. Moving forward, accelerated by the ASM Strategic Plan 2021-2025, the agency aspires to leave a lasting positive impact on society as an independent thought leader in STIE.
Having been appointed as the President of ASM in December 2016, I am delighted to witness its tremendous evolution over the years. Taking over from my predecessors, I understood the weight of my responsibilities in carrying forward the progress of ASM and enhancing its national and global role. As I pen this foreword, it marks the end of my tenure. It allows me to reflect on our remarkable achievements during my two terms, highlighting ASM’s noteworthy accomplishments.
From the beginning, ASM has been a significant promoter of STI. Starting in 2010, we enhanced our function as a full-fledged think tank that shares independent and evidence-based input with the government to influence policymakers for the nation’s development and the benefit of humanity. Now, as a Changemaker, we aim to advance Malaysia as a High-Tech Nation by 2030. With a bird’s eye view of the STI ecosystem, ASM developed the 10-10 MySTIE, a tool to integrate STI with the economy and reinvigorate into Malaysia’s research, innovation, and enterprise activities.
“Application of 10-10 MySTIE in every location will move each socioeconomic sector up the innovation value chain. Only then can science be seen and felt to benefit the community and industry.”
THE JOURNEY CONTINUES
The earlier mentioned has shown how ASM’s function has moved from an STI promoter to the role of a Changemaker. This significant capacity has put ASM in the spotlight, whereby the President of ASM is now appointed as the Science, Technology, and Innovation Advisor to the Nation. I am convinced that ASM will continue to develop into a robust and reliable science advisory body for the country, by suggesting and updating policies, methods, processes, and actions to elevate national accomplishments and sustainability in STI with the help of its expert networks.
I have always been proud of ASM’s work, made possible by the assistance and direction of our vast expert network. As our network of collaborators continues to expand, we also increase our capacity to tap into them, improving ASM’s content, data, analytics, and networks to foster significant change internally and at the national and international levels.
You’ll discover more about ASM’s latest initiatives and accomplishments this year as you read. Be delighted by how ASM is dedicated to positively impact society and be a Changemaker.
