Strengthening Malaysia–South Africa STI Ties
August 20, 2025The 12th Sabah Oil, Gas & Energy Conference & Exhibition (SOGCE), held from 3 to 4 July 2025 with the theme “Fostering Collaboration, Paving Sustainable Opportunities”, provided a crucial platform for energy professionals, government leaders, and industry stakeholders to gather and discuss the future of energy in Malaysia and beyond.
One of the most impactful sessions was the Technical Session on the “Emergence of the Blue Economy,” which featured ASM CEO Puan Hazami Habib as a panellist. Puan Hazami’s insights were central to the discussion, as she highlighted the vital role of Science, Technology, Innovation, and Economy (STIE) in advancing the Blue Economy, particularly in both national and Sabah-specific contexts.
Her key message emphasised the need for cross-collaboration among the quadruple helix and between federal and state governments to ensure the spillover impact of growth benefits not only the oil and gas and energy sector but also all eight strategic sectors of Malaysia’s Blue Economy.
Based on ASM’s Position Paper on Blue Economy: Unlocking the Value of the Oceans, the study proposes recognising eight strategic sectors as Blue Economy clusters under the 13th Malaysia Plan (RMK-13) and adopting the 8R-Nature-Centric Blue Economy (8R-NCBE) philosophy to ensure sustainability and socio-economic benefits for the rakyat.
