ASM and Jordan Explore New Frontiers in Science Collaboration
March 19, 2026On 23 February 2026, ASM received a courtesy visit from Pusat IDEA UKM, a strategic research unit under the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research & Innovation) of Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM).
The discussion centred on UKM’s research direction for RMK-13, particularly its emphasis on mission-oriented research, which is research & development designed to address national priorities and societal challenges directly.
As a strategic R&D unit, Pusat IDEA plays a key role in capacity building, strengthening research coordination, and enhancing impact-driven initiatives across the university.
A major focus of the engagement was social innovation and the broader question of how science, technology, and innovation (STI) translate into tangible societal benefits.
Both parties exchanged views on the importance of measuring not only outputs such as publications or patents, but also real-world impact on communities.
In this context, the discussion touched on the need to evaluate STI contributions through more holistic lenses, including the potential development or refinement of a societal wellbeing index.
Such an approach would enable policymakers and institutions to understand how research outcomes improve the quality of life, social resilience, and inclusive development.
The visit reaffirmed the shared commitment between ASM and UKM to advance impactful, mission-driven research that goes beyond academic excellence, placing people and societal wellbeing at the centre of innovation.
ASM looks forward to continued engagement with Pusat IDEA UKM to strengthen evidence-based policymaking and ensure that Malaysia’s STI ecosystem delivers meaningful and measurable benefits to its rakyat.
