Malaysia Advances Innovation at APEC Policy Meeting
September 27, 2024On 17 August 2024, the JSPS Alumni Association Malaysia (JAAM), in collaboration with the Academy of Sciences Malaysia (ASM) and the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS), organised a symposium titled ‘Using Science and Technology to Provide Nature-Based Solutions to Planetary Health.’ The symposium focused on how science and technology can enhance nature-based solutions to address environmental and health challenges. It also emphasised the importance of integrating these solutions into policies and promoting sustainable, innovative approaches to planetary health.
In her opening speech, ASM Vice-President, Academician Distinguished Professor Datuk Looi Lai Meng FASc, expressed optimism that Malaysia could draw valuable lessons from Japan’s successful integration of sustainable practices into its society, especially as the country advances its efforts with the National Planetary Health Action Plan (NPHAP). Director of the JSPS Bangkok, Dr Yoshio Otani, emphasised the importance of the collaboration between ASM, JSPS, and JAAM in promoting research exchange, which is essential for advancing educational research and achieving scientific excellence.
The symposium was moderated by Prof Dato’ Dr Aileen Tan Shau Hwai FASc. It featured esteemed speakers, including Prof Dr Tomohiro Ban from Yokohama University, Prof Eddie Allison from the WorldFish Center, and Prof Ts Dr Ali Selamat from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM). ASM extends our heartfelt thanks to all participants whose active involvement was integral to the success of this symposium. It is hoped that the insights gained from this symposium will be translated into actionable items, fostering further collaboration in the future.
