ASM ArtScience™ Prize 2025 Celebrates Creativity and Sustainability
December 8, 2025The successful introduction of the National Planetary Health Action Plan (NPHAP) on 20 November 2025 marks a significant milestone in Malaysia’s transition toward a healthier planet and society. Mandated by the National Science Council, MOSTI entrusted ASM with leading the development of this comprehensive national plan in 2022.
In his officiating address, Minister of MOSTI, YB Tuan Chang Lih Kang, emphasised that the NPHAP charts a bold yet achievable path for Malaysia’s sustainability journey. Therefore, planetary health must become a national conversation, and education is key in shaping mindsets and behaviours towards a culture of sustainability.
ASM President, Academician Datuk Dr Tengku Mohd Azzman Shariffadeen FASc, echoed this sentiment, stressing that the NPHAP seeks to move Malaysia beyond incremental change toward systemic transformation, one that safeguards communities, protects natural ecosystems, and strengthens long-term economic resilience.
The NPHAP integrates planetary health principles across governance, education, and industry through a whole-of-nation approach anchored by six Key Result Areas, 53 strategies, and 222 action plans. The plan is guided by principles that are humanity-centric, STI-enabled, nature-based, and values-driven, positioning Malaysia as a responsible planetary steward committed to cultivating globally competitive talent for a sustainable future.
Earlier, a forum session titled “Advancing Planetary Health: Bridging Policy and Practice” brought together panellists from government, NGOs, academia, research institutions, and industry. They shared perspectives on strengthening Malaysia’s collective efforts and embedding planetary health into national systems and community practices.
ASM expresses its sincere appreciation to all partners and participants who contributed to the success of today’s event. The commitment shown reinforces that protecting planetary health is not just an environmental effort; it is a national responsibility that shapes the well-being and resilience of current and future generations.
