[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Demographic shifts in Southeast Asia (SEA) have increased the demand for <\/span>diagnostics<\/span><\/a> and <\/span>pharmaceuticals<\/span><\/a>, highlighting the need for improved access and affordability. Diagnostics and treatment access inequalities, especially in rural areas, pose significant challenges to achieving <\/span>universal health coverage<\/span><\/a> (UHC).<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

To address these issues, the Academy of Sciences Malaysia (ASM) and the Academy of Medical Sciences UK (<\/span>AMS<\/span><\/a>) held a Diagnostics and Therapeutics Workshop from 1 to 2 July 2024, aimed at advancing the development and accessibility of diagnostics and therapeutics across Southeast Asia.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

ASM President, <\/span>Academician Datuk Dr Tengku Mohd Azzman Shariffadeen FASc<\/span><\/a> emphasised the critical role of diagnostics and therapeutics in health systems for improving <\/span>disease prevention and treatment<\/span><\/a>. He highlighted the complexity of health management systems and the importance of <\/span>digital twins<\/span><\/a> in creating safe and optimal environments. He expressed confidence in the expertise of the workshop’s speakers and participants, hoping the event would yield valuable policy recommendations.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In his speech, AMS Executive Director <\/span>Simon Denegri OBE<\/span><\/a> shared that AMS focuses on influencing policy, supporting early career researchers, and improving public trust through engagement. He highlighted their new strategy, \u201cGood Health Supported by the Best Research and Evidence,\u201d which prioritises building global partnerships. These partnerships are vital for sharing knowledge and addressing health challenges, exemplified by this workshop’s commitment to equitable partnerships and international collaboration.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The two-day workshop was attended by around 60 prominent figures and experts from academia, research institutes, industries, government agencies, and civil society from 10 countries. The first day featured esteemed speakers from various backgrounds delivering keynote presentations and an expert panel discussion. The second day included case study presentations from local and international experts, followed by group presentations. It concluded with a plenary session identifying action items for participants to take back to their respective countries and institutions.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
