In conjunction with the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) 2024 in Lima, Peru, Malaysia, through the Academy of Sciences Malaysia (ASM), organised the PPSTI Workshop on the Landscape Study and Benchmarking Workshop for the APEC Open Science Alliance.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

ASM CEO Puan Hazami presented the APEC Open Science Alliance concept as a building block of the Mission-Oriented Innovation Policy (MOIP). The workshop, a continuation of the virtual workshop on 20 June 2024, highlighted open science initiatives from APEC Economies and case studies on domain-specific fields. Malaysia Open Science Alliance Co-Chair Professor Dr Noorsaadah Abd Rahman FASc moderated the first session, which focused on insights and aspirations in open science from APEC Economies.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The workshop continues with breakout rooms focusing on governance, capacity building and research data management. Thirty-five participants from 11 economies attended this workshop to give insights on their current state of open science. The inputs from the two workshops will be presented during the SOM3 APEC PPSTI Meeting as the first phase of the landscape study of open science in APEC Economies.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Malaysia, represented by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI) and the Academy of Sciences Malaysia (ASM), attended the 24th APEC Policy Partnership on Science, Technology and Innovation meeting on 19 and 20 August 2024 in Lima, Peru.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

During the meeting, ASM CEO Puan Hazami Habib reported on the APEC Open Science Alliance (APECOSA) workshop outcomes, which met with strong support from member economies. She also chaired the building science capacity subgroup with presentations of six projects from three member economies. Other highlights of the meeting include the discussion on mission-oriented innovation policy (MOIP), which envisions PPSTI better aligning its projects towards addressing the grand challenges of APEC.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Outside the session, Under Secretary of the International Division MOSTI, Dr N. Balamurugan and Puan Hazami met the new chair of APEC PPSTI, Rahima Kandahari and APEC PPSTI Vice-Chair Dr Hwanil Park.
