Malaysia stands at a defining moment in its development journey. As highlighted in an article by The Edge Malaysia<\/em>, the National Planetary Health Action Plan (NPHAP<\/a>) signals a shift towards a more balanced model of growth.<\/p>\n

The shift harmonises economic progress with human wellbeing and environmental sustainability.<\/p>\n

Developed by ASM, the NPHAP reframes the nation\u2019s approach to development. According to ASM President Academician Datuk Dr Tengku Mohd Azzman Shariffadeen FASc, the challenges faced today stem from a fragmented worldview that separates humanity from nature.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe problems we have today come about because of a certain view about science and technology,\u201d he explains, emphasising the need to return to \u201ca sustainable way of life.\u201d<\/p>\n

Central to this transformation is the idea that science must serve society. Rather than relying solely on technical solutions, the NPHAP integrates values, culture, and diverse stakeholder perspectives.<\/p>\n

The NPHAP also calls for stronger collaboration across government, industry, and communities to address complex environmental and social challenges.<\/p>\n

Complementing this vision is the introduction of Return on Values (ROV), a framework that broadens how success is measured.<\/p>\n

Chair of the Framework and Integration Pillar of NPHAP, Professor Dr Mahendhiran Sanggaran Nair FASc, noted that traditional models focused heavily on profit maximisation have contributed to a \u201czero-sum development model.\u201d<\/p>\n

In contrast, he explains, \u201cROV looks at the whole ecosystem,\u201d encompassing environmental, social, economic, and governance dimensions.<\/p>\n

The urgency for change is clear. Environmental risks and climate-related disasters are already imposing high costs on Malaysia, underscoring the need for a more sustainable pathway.<\/p>\n

As The Edge Malaysia<\/em> article underscores, the NPHAP is more than a policy framework. It is a call to redefine growth itself.<\/p>\n

By aligning development with planetary limits and shared values, Malaysia could chart a resilient and inclusive future for generations to come.<\/p>\n
