Dr Mohd Kamal Harun is an expert in corrosion technology. He is known for his
contribution in improving the structural and interfacial integrity of polymeric coatings in barrier performance towards corrosion reactions. He has enhanced the understanding of corrosion protection performance for fluorocarbon coated on Zn/Ni treated carbon steel bolts and nuts as well as thermal spray aluminium coated carbon steels.
Dr Kamal has contributed vastly towards enhancing the university-industry
collaboration. He has conducted Master-classes under the Institute of Materials Malaysia (2012 and 2014) which aimed to train the industrial personnel in the areas of corrosion protection. Within the Institute of Materials Malaysia he is spearheading the academia-industry agenda with the goal of bridging the gap on academic knowledge versus industrial skill and capacity building as well as university research and industrial innovation. Besides, he is also working on setting new quality standards in the coating industries by providing the academic research acquired knowledge in the finger-printing of coatings for industrial applications. He is frequently invited to do training and consultancies mainly within the paint industries, government research agencies, and module fabricators for off shore platforms.
He has published more than 60 publications which include Education Ministry’s documents
and journal publications, several chapters in books and reviewed international journals mainly
focusing on the corrosion protection by novel inorganic Schiff based compounds as inhibitors, under film corrosion, adhesion modifiers, electro-polymers and electronic and ionic conductivity of polymers and polymer electrolytes and barrier protection degradation dependency on ionic resistance of polymeric coatings.
Apart from research, he has also held many administration and management positions. He was the Deputy Vice Chancellor Research and Innovation and Head the Global Entrepreneurship Research and Innovation Centre at University Malaysia Kelantan. He was also the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Industrial and Community Networking) at University Teknologi MARA from 2007 – 2010, Dean of the Faculty of Applied Science, UiTM from 2005 – 2007, and the Director of the UiTM Malacca Branch Campus (2002 – 2005). Currently he is the Chief Executive Officer of Razak School of Government.
