Tan Sri Dato’ Ir (Dr) Wan Abdul Rahman Hj Wan Yaacob FASc was the former Director General of the Public Works Department (1990 to 1996). He entered the civil service at the Public Works Department as a technical cadet on 1 June 1964 and retired on 21 June 1996. He was an experienced engineer and made a great contribution to the development of the country. He worked at JKR Terengganu, Selangor, Cameron Highlands, and Perak.
He also served to the National Institute of Technology as an Assistant Lecturer for one year. Among the important positions he held were Director of JKR Selangor and Terengganu and seconded as Director of the Technical Division at the Central Terengganu Development Board for three years. He also served as the Director of Public Works Pahang, Director of Management at JKR Headquarters, Kuala Lumpur, Deputy Director General I of Public Works and Director General of Public Works.
Tan Sri Dato’ Ir (Dr) Wan Abdul Rahman was the recipient of the Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM) Award in 1994 for his contribution and role in the development of the country’s infrastructure. After retiring as the Director General of the Public Works Department in 1996, he held chairmanships at IJM Corporation Berhad, Litrak, Northport, Malaysian International Merchant Bankers Berhad, Minconsult and the Malaysian Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB).
He was also active in the Malay Cricket Association of Malaysia. Through his services, he ensured that UiTM signed an agreement as one of the high-performance centres for Malay cricket in higher education on 25 February 2011. The other two high performance centers of the association are at UKM and the Asia Pacific University. On 29 January 2014, he also entered into an agreement with Princess of Naradhiwas University in Narathiwat (PNU), Thailand. This agreement ensures that players at the Malay Cricket Development Centre in Pattani, Thailand, can easily continue their studies at PNU.
Tan Sri Dato’ Ir (Dr) Wan Abdul Rahman Hj Wan Yaacob FASc passed away on 2 July 2022. His contribution as a leader of the Malaysian civil engineering industry and as an ASM Fellow will always be remembered.
