April 28, 2023Towards a dynamic STI ecosystem to drive economic growth, community empowerment, and environmental sustainability of ASEAN 2035.
ASEAN is part of a bigger picture where advancements and disruptions alike are happening. While we are making rapid progress in various aspects; the economic volatility, major shifts, and global uncertainty has affected the region as a whole and what ASEAN really needs is a sustainable growth to ensure the region emerges as a strong and vibrant block.
Realising this, at the 74th ASEAN Committee on Science, Technology, and Innovation (COSTI) in Thailand, the formation of the ASEAN Foresight Alliance (AFA) initiative was approved. The 10 ASEAN Member State (AMS) Alliance have committed to play their roles in addressing pressing global challenges over the next few decades. The main output of the alliance was to produce the ASEAN STI Ecosystem Foresight 2035 study report.
In facilitating and supporting the study, a cohort of permanent foresight researchers called the ASEAN Foresight Research Cohort (AFRC) was established comprising researchers who will be focal points to work with the study team in providing data as well as insight into each states’ science, technology, and innovation (STI) landscape.
The study will encompass the application of 10 Science and Technology drivers, transformation of 10 socioeconomic areas and 10 Forces of Change shaping the future based on the 10-10 MySTIE Framework. The study is an effort to strengthen the STI landscape by mobilising STI towards the development of the region’s socioeconomy. It aims to project what is beyond 2025 for ASEAN predicated on STI capacity and competency, thus making ASEAN more agile in facing future challenges and shaping forward-looking plans and coordination in terms of STI.
The Alliance will engage thought leaders, icons and personalities to provide gather The study report will be presented at the ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Science, Technology and Innovation (AMMSTI) for adoption in June, 2024.
