Precision Biodiversity: Digitalisation & IoT Programme
April 27, 2023ASM and Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM) implemented a POC project for Wireless Bridging System technology in Kampung Kuala Pajam, Beranang, Selangor. This project is led by TRSM recipient Associate Professor Dr Muhammad Ramlee Kamarudin from UTHM. This approach expands internet coverage from primary facilities with high-speed internet capabilities to areas and communities without connections or services.
Objectives
-
To demonstrate the feasibility of Wireless Bridging System technology in increasing internet access in Kampung Kuala Pajam, Selangor.
-
To immediately address underserved and unserved communities, especially amongst students for online learning and encouraging e-entrepreneurship amongst villagers.
Kampung Kuala Pajam, Beranang, Selangor is an area with an approximate radius of 1.5 square kilometres. Pusat Komuniti Desa (PKD) Kuala Pajam is used as the main internet source. During the POC period, the internet speed was increased to 300Mbps. This allowed internet services to reach nearby villages such as Kampung Sesapan Kelubi (around 2.5 kilometres).
Seven locations were chosen with a limited participant of 25 to 30 people, both recipients and internet users. The data shows that the total internet usage in April was 350GB which has increased to almost 700GB in June, almost a 100% increase, this shows the impact of this POC project.
Improvement
-
Surveying land and applying suitable technology for underserved communities should precede project implementation.
-
Incorporating complementary technologies for the Wireless Bridging System such as customer premises equipment (CPE), high-gain antennas and meta-surface reflectors.
-
Using solar-powered technology to preserve the location of the connector (relayer).
-
Involving expert engineers in the field of structural construction from the beginning.
Challenges
-
No preliminary study of the terrain was made in the POC area.
-
The use of cranes for mast installation increases the cost.
-
If the location of the connector (relayer) has a problem, the recipient’s house from the relayer will not have internet.
-
There is no verification of the design and installation of the pole by the engineer.
Moving forward, the project aims to implement Wireless Bridging System technology in Bandar Petri Jaya, Kota Tinggi, Johor and other areas that need this technology.
