August 30, 2019YSN-ASM Member Receives Youth Service Award 2019
October 3, 2019A Senior Fellows’ Gathering was held on 2 August 2019 at The Gallery, Tournament Player Club in KL.
The Gathering served as an informal platform to network, share thoughts and discuss matters pertaining to ASM as well as science, technology and innovation of the country.
At the Gathering, ASM President Professor Datuk Dr Asma Ismail FASc commenced her presentation by highlighting ASM’s growth from a mere statutory body into a prominent scientific thought leader.
Datuk Asma continued to highlight some changes in the discipline group structure of ASM. The discipline groups have undergone some changes, with the most recent being a separation of the Engineering Sciences and Information Technology, followed by a renaming of the latter into Information Technology and Computer Sciences. The addition of the Social Sciences and Humanities discipline group was also highlighted.
ASM’s independent input and quality of studies have earned the trust and acknowledgement of several ministries and organisations. ASM’s valued strategic input have resulted in several reports such as the National Entrepreneurship Policy (NEP), the Mid-term Review of Malaysian Education Blueprint 2015-2025 (higher Education), Impact Study of the Implementation of Malaysian Research Universities and Malaysia Policy & Master Plan on Science, Technology and Innovation (2021-2030).
Datuk Asma went on to encourage the cooperation and contribution of Senior Fellows in upcoming ASM Studies such as Science Outlook 2020, Emerging Science, Engineering and Technology (ESET) 2.0 and Foresight Study: Deep Dive.
Continuing her presentation, Datuk Asma elucidated on the ASM Strategic Plan (2007-2020), which is the main guideline for ASM to achieve its vision, mission and goals by 2020.
Seeing as 2020 is the final year of this Strategic Plan, Datuk Asma laid out ASM’s plans to review ASM’s achievements from 1996 to 2020 by a steering committee led by its Secretary-general with five sub-groups and external evaluators.
Following the review comes development of a new strategic plan for 2021-2030, which will be based on past strategic plan’s evaluation, trends and needs. The development process also entails interviews with relevant players such as the Prime Minister, past and current ASM Presidents honourary Fellows and Senior Fellows.
Datuk Asma encouraged Senior Fellows to actively contribute to the review and development of ASM’s Strategic Plan towards the growth of ASM and STI of the country.
During the Gathering, Datuk Asma also presented the draft slide for the presentation of Malaysia Policy & Master Plan on STI that will be presented to YAB Prime Minister, for the Senior Fellows’ feedback.
