Five ASM Fellows Awarded by Malaysian Scientific Association

Once again, the Academy of Sciences Malaysia (ASM) provided its expertise in STEM education to the Chemical Company of Malaysia Berhad (CCM) in organising the second edition of the STEM Up Challenge, held on 24 April 2019.
The 2019 STEM Up Challenge carried the theme “#sustainability #cleanenergy #zerowaste”. Held in Amanjaya, Sungai Petani, Kedah, this programme aims to make a half-day campaign educational, fun & impactful.
Making STEM learning fun & relatable is the main objective of the STEM Up Challenge. It shows how complex knowledge that is acquired in school can be broken down into basic theory and creatively apply their knowledge in problem-solving.
Furthermore, the STEM Up Challenge will illuminate students with an understanding of how STEM-related career paths can change the world as they know it.
This year, MRSM Merbok emerge as the overall champion of the programme by their excellent performance throughout the programme and by winning the Battle of the Wits, the Grand Finale quiz.
Runners-up of the quiz (from first to fifth) are as follows:

- SMJK Sin Min
- SMK Khir Johari
- SMK Agama Yan
- SMK Convent Father Barre
Also, the award for best laboratory presentation was given to SMK Ibrahim for their project on producing a DEREM charger that converts thermoelectric energy (waste heat) to electrical energy.
SMK Ibrahim’s outstanding project stood out among the other brilliant projects presented during the #MyLabRules segment of the Semi-Finals.
The CCM STEM Up Challenge began with a Preliminary Round held on 19 April 2019, which featured a paper quiz that involved 48 secondary schools in determining the top 20 students that will advance to the Semi-Final and Grand Finale round.
The Semi-Final Round followed this on 24 April 2019, which entailed two challenges: #MyLabRules and the Amazing Science Challenge.
Then, the Grand Finale Round was held on the same day, which featured an e-quiz titled Battle of the Wits that utilises Kahoot!, a game-based learning platform.
The 2019 STEM Up Challenge is an initiative by CCM, in partnership with the Academy of Sciences Malaysia (ASM) and the Young Scientists Network-ASM and held in conjunction with Minggu Saham Amanah Malaysia organised by Permodalan Nasional Berhad and Amanah Saham Nasional Berhad.
