Profesor Dr Joy Jacqueline Pereira FASc bagi kategori Alam Sekitar, Emeritus Profesor Dr Jomo Kwame Sundaram FASc (Pencapaian Akademik Cemerlang) dan Tan Sri Dato’ Dr Abu Bakar Dato’ Suleiman FASc (Kesihatan, Sains dan Teknologi).
Anugerah Merdeka mengiktiraf dan memberi penghormatan kepada individu dan organisasi cemerlang di mana hasil kerja mereka bukan sahaja menyumbang kepada pertumbuhan negara, tetapi turut memberi inspirasi kepada rakyat Malaysia.

Professor Dr Joy Jacqueline Pereira FASc
Recipient of Outstanding Contribution to Environment and Planetary Health 2024
Professor Dr Joy Jacqueline Pereira excels at bridging science and policy, particularly in climate change. As Chairperson of MyCLIMATE, she makes scientific data accessible to the public and policymakers, focusing on disaster risk reduction and sustainable development. Her research underpins adaptation strategies and influences policies, earning her leadership roles globally. Since 2023, she has served as the first female Asian co-chair of the IPCC Working Group III, shaping global climate mitigation efforts.
Dr Joy has also contributed to disaster resilience as part of the UNDRR’s Asia-Pacific Science and Technology Advisory Group and as Director of ANCST at UKM. Her initiatives include the Kuala Lumpur Multi-Hazard Platform, an advanced forecasting system aiding urban disaster preparedness, and the MyBahaya Platform, which empowers geologists to address geohazards and foster community resilience.
A trailblazer, Dr Joy has mentored over 40 researchers at SEADPRI-UKM, influencing global climate policies. With numerous awards, including the MyRA Excellence Award, and extensive publications, she demonstrates how science drives action. Her work builds resilience and sets the foundation for a sustainable future.

Emeritus Professor Dr Jomo Kwame Sundaram FASc
Recipient of Outstanding Scholastic and Academic Achievement 2024
Emeritus Professor Dr Jomo Kwame Sundaram has shaped economic policy in Malaysia and internationally. After Malaysia’s 2018 general election, he advised the government as a member of the Council of Eminent Persons and later the Economic Action Council. A prolific scholar, Dr Jomo has authored over 100 books and numerous articles on development, globalisation, and social justice.
As Assistant Secretary-General for Economic Development at the United Nations (2005–2012), Dr Jomo revitalised global economic policy discussions. He helped shape responses to the 2008 financial crisis through the Stiglitz Commission and championed the UN’s Global Green New Deal, promoting sustainable recovery, poverty eradication, and ecological sustainability. His contributions were instrumental in transitioning from the Millennium Development Goals to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which he integrated into Malaysian planning frameworks.
Dr Jomo’s dedication extends to eradicating malnutrition, leading key initiatives like the 2nd International Conference on Nutrition. His work earned him prestigious honors, including the Abe Fellowship and the Leontief Prize. Through his writings, mentorship, and advisory roles, Jomo has advanced socio-economic development and inspired future economists, leaving a lasting impact on policies and global sustainability efforts.

Tan Sri Dato' Dr Abu Bakar Suleiman FASc
Recipient of Outstanding Contribution to Science, Technology & Innovation 2024
Dr. Abu Bakar Suleiman played a pivotal role in advancing Malaysia’s healthcare system. As the nation’s first nephrologist in the Ministry of Health, he decentralized dialysis services, establishing satellite units and promoting self-care dialysis to improve patient access and quality of life.
As Director-General of Health (1991–2001), Dr. Abu Bakar spearheaded transformative initiatives like the Telehealth Blueprint, introducing electronic health records and teleconsultations. Despite challenges, this visionary project modernized Malaysia’s healthcare and laid the foundation for digital health advancements, especially during the COVID-19 era.
He championed professional development by introducing mandatory Continuous Medical Education (CME) and establishing the National Specialist Registry (NSR), ensuring transparency and competency among medical specialists. As President of the International Medical University, he nurtured the next generation of healthcare professionals.
On the global stage, Dr. Abu Bakar represented Malaysia in key health discussions and contributed to WHO initiatives. His lifetime achievements earned him prestigious honors, including the Lifetime Achievement Award and an honorary doctorate.
Dr. Abu Bakar’s innovative leadership, dedication to patient empowerment, and contributions to public health leave an enduring legacy in Malaysia’s healthcare landscape.
