February 15, 2018Carrying the theme “Sustain the Impact”, the Young Scientists Network-Academy of Sciences Malaysia (YSN-ASM) held the annual colloquium at Avillion Admiral Cove, Port Dickson from 8 to 10 December 2017. The opening ceremony was attended and officiated by the CEO of ASM, Madam Hazami Habib. The YSN-ASM Colloquium is held annually to engage and excite high-achieving young scientists to work towards a greater common goal of improving our science ecosystem.
During the colloquium, YSN members and affiliates have elected new council members to lead YSN for the 2017/2019 term: Dr Chai Lay Ching (Vice-Chair), Dr Mohd Ghows Mohd Azzam (Secretary-General) and Dr Iqbal Saripan (Treasurer). The nine working group chairs and co-chairs have also been elected for the 2017/2018 term, as follows:

In 2018, there will be more collaboration between working groups to leverage on each group’s strength, resources and network.
All work and no play would make the YSN a dull organisation; the sessions of serious work is interlaced with recreational activities that aim to strengthen the bond between all members. A session of BodyCombat and yoga was held on Saturday and Sunday morning respectively, while a volleyball game was held on Saturday evening.
On Saturday evening, Vice President of ASM, YM Tengku Datuk Dr Mohd Azzman Shariffadeen FASc gave a talk to YSN-ASM members and affiliates to highlight the vision for the young scientists. This was followed by an experience sharing session by Professor Dr Denny and Dr Mohd Ghows on the YSN-ASM: Mentor-Mentee programme. The Mentoring Programme aims to connect YSN members and affiliates with ASM’s fellows. It serves as a platform of thought-sharing and initiating future collaborations in various scientific researches.
Sunday marks the closing of the 2017 YSN-ASM Colloquium. The event was attended by ASM President Professor Datuk Dr Asma Ismail FASc. The chair and co-chair from each working group presented their plans for 2018 to Professor Datuk Asma. Next, the ASM President delivered her closing speech, commending the achievements of programmes conducted by YSN-ASM in 2017 and imparted words of wisdom to the young scientists. During the closing ceremony too, the new members and affiliates were presented with their certificates of appointment from the ASM President.
