Hydrogen Economy: What is the Way Forward for Malaysia?
May 27, 2019The Science Communication Working Group of the Young Scientists Network-Academy of Sciences Malaysia (YSN-ASM) organised a stakeholder engagement workshop on the Malaysian Science Communication Module on 18 April 2019.
The YSN-ASM’s Science Communication Working Group is currently developing a Malaysian Science Communication Module that is intended as a guide for science communication training with an emphasis on effective delivery of oral, written and visual science communication.
Effective science communication will be targeted to a non-expert audience and delivered by anyone interested to communicate science, be it academics, researchers, communicators, industry members, and science journalists.
In this workshop, anti-vaxxers, sex education, mental health, pseudoscience, and food science have been identified as the top five topics in Malaysia to be addressed using science communication techniques.
These five topics were shortlisted during the YSN-ASM Stakeholder Engagement Workshop on the Malaysian Science Communication Module on 18 April 2019.
This workshop aims to collect stakeholder perspectives to aid in developing the Malaysian Science Communication Module.
After the topics were selected, participants were divided into five groups to discuss the issues that are related to it, how each item can be addressed using science communication to the targeted audience, as well as opportunities and challenges in addressing said topic.
Then, participants were reshuffled into new groups, this time for each group to address different target audiences.
This exercise was carried out to determine the best techniques and media to approach each target audience to address the selected topics.
The participants’ valuable input and opinions on this subject matter are critical to ensure that the Module in creation will satisfy the need and address the various challenges we face in effectively communicating evidence and demystifying facts from fiction.
