April 27, 2023MOSTI organised the Minggu Sains Negara Keluarga Malaysia (MSNKM) 2022 with the theme “Merakyatkan Sains, Menginsankan Teknologi” from April to October 2022. The national science initiative’s objectives were to enculture science and to increase public awareness on the importance of STI in every day life and nurture the interest and increase the number of students in STEM subjects. Various national level programmes were jointly organised in collaboration with ministries, state governments, government agencies, corporate sectors, professional bodies and civil societies.
Programmes were organised based on focus areas of the respective month. As such, ASM being the lead agency for the month of April, organised programmes under the focus area ‘Planetary Health’. Various programmes were held, and online contents were developed to educate the general public and instil interest in STEM.
ASM through YSN-ASM has conducted eight programmes throughout MSNKM 2022:
Planetary Health Webinar
1 April 2022
This webinar gave an overview on what is Planetary Health and factors that could affect the planet’s health. A total of 375 viewers through Zoom and 152 viewers from YouTube had watched the webinar.

YBM Mosti’s Engagement Session With Ysn-Asm & The Launching Of The Science Communication Module
26 April 2022
This programme was attended by 90 YSN-ASM members. YSN-ASM had the opportunity to share their overview on the nation’s STI landscape with YB Dato’ Sri Dr Adham Baba and had provided their challenges, concern, and success through the perspective of young scientists.
In conjunction with the engagement session, YB Dato’ Sri Dr Adham Baba launched the Science Communication Module. This module was identified as one of the best tools to help researchers and scientists to transmit scientific ideas, methods, knowledge and research to non-expert audiences in an effective, accurate, and interesting way.

The objective of this e-games was to encourage students to explore the subjects related with planetary health and to improve students’ understanding on STEM subjects through e-games. There were three games played for each week:
Week 1: Health and non communicable disease
Week 2: Climate change and biodiversity health
Week 3: Water and food security
More than 600 students participated in these e-games.

A student attempting hands-on activity through virtual facilitation by YSN-ASM. YSN-ASM in collaboration with Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia (USIM) organised the Science & Arts@Home programme that was participated by 100 students. Science experiment kits of slime and quicksand were sent to the students’ house for them to carry out the hands-on activities together with the YSN-ASM facilitator. The session was conducted from their home whilst answering science quizzes. Fifty-six students participated in the Science Poster Competition organised in conjunction with the Science & Arts@Home programme. Science & Arts @ Home

Impact
These activities received encouraging response and participation, especially from school students. Through these virtual activities, it is proved that learning science can be fun regardless of if it is physical or virtual. Also, students were able to increase their knowledge and awareness in science related with Planetary Health.
Recommendations
- To organise more hands-on activities that come together with the science kits for school students.
-
To have activity that enable a mixture of students from university, high school and primary school students. This will encourage diverse knowledge sharing, mentorship and leadership.
MSNKM 2022 activities were not just focused on school children, but also young scientists, researchers, teachers and public. This is important to nurture science as a whole-nation approach. ASM collaborated with various organisations which include institutions of higher learning and socities.
A video on Planetary Health that elaborated on Planetary Health and its components was shown throughout MSNKM 2022 so that the message can be conveyed clearly, especially to school students.
