August 30, 2018Four teams have triumphed over 12 others to secure the top spots at the 2018 National Science Challenge (NSC) Semi Final.
SMK King George V (Negeri Sembilan), Kolej Yayasan Saad (Melaka), MRSM Tun Abdul Razak Pekan (Pahang) and the Wild Card Team from Kedah (represented by students from SMJK Sin Min, MRSM Langkawi and MRSM Kubang Pasu) have qualified to represent their respective states at the 2018 NSC Grand Final.
The Semi Final Round was held from 9 to 15 August 2018 at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, Johor. 16 teams of three students from each state nationwide represented their respective state in the Semi Final Round.
The Semi Final featured a weeklong science camp filled with activities that tested the teams’ scientific knowledge, interpersonal skills as well as their presentation skills.
For the Semi Final Round, members of the Young Scientists Network-ASM (YSN-ASM) created several science modules to test the students’ academic knowledge and teamwork. This year, the Semi Final Round featured a field trip to Tanjung Kupang, a well-known spot of mangrove in Johor that possesses a diverse ecosystem.
In addition, they were given one big project based on the theme of this year’s Semi Final: Smart Community. The students then presented their work to a panel of judges from YSN-ASM. The top four teams that performed admirably in the presentation qualified to the NSC Grand Final Level.
The 2018 NSC Grand Final will be held on 13 September 2018 at Dewan Tunku Canselor, Universiti Malaya. It will feature a science quiz as well as a presentation round.
