January 26, 2021Like clockwork, the YSN-ASM Colloquium is here again. This annual programme is organised by the Young Scientists Network-Academy of Sciences Malaysia. This year, the Colloquium was held virtually from 4 to 5 December 2020 in view of the current pandemic situation, keeping everyone safe and sound in the comfort of their homes or office.
Boasting the highest attendance to date, the 2020 YSN-ASM Colloquium continues its role as an avenue for the YSN-ASM members and affiliates to gather, get acquainted, build network, and formulate programmes to advance the nation’s science, technology, and innovation.
On the first day of the Colloquium, Following a welcoming speech by Dr Chai Lay Ching, Chairperson of YSN-ASM, the chair/co-chair of each Working Group introduced newcomers to what the Working Groups is all about. Once everyone has been acquainted with the Working Groups and each other, an election for the 2020/2021 Exco members commenced.
The second day started off with the announcement of the 2020/2021 YSN-ASM Exco members, witnessed by the ASM President YBhg Professor Datuk Dr Asma Ismail FASc. This was followed by Datuk Asma’s sharing session with the YSN-ASM members and affiliates.
In the spirit of revisiting the journey of ASM via its 25th anniversary celebration in 2020, Datuk Asma also recounted the achievements of YSN-ASM in championing STI initiatives. She applauded these outstanding young Malaysian scientists who are not only excellent in their field of study but also demonstrate a passion in contributing to society and collaborate with colleagues from diverse fields and backgrounds. Plus, in the eight years of its operation, YSN-ASM has expanded from championing STI initiatives in Malaysia to being a prominent voice in the ASEAN region.
Through her speech, Datuk Asma encouraged the new and existing YSN-ASM members and affiliates to get acquainted with Fellows and Associates for their valuable guidance. She also encouraged YSN members to participate in several pilot projects embarked upon by ASM to bring about improvements to the scientific ecosystem and quality of life through STI.
Datuk Asma also officiated the YSN-ASM IBSE Modules titled Begitulah Sang Suria: Daripada Cahaya Kepada Elektrik and Gen Inovasi Kehidupan, developed by a team led by Dr Nurbiha Abd Shukor with the guidance of ASM Fellow Dato’ Dr Sharifah Maimunah Syed Zin FASc. Datuk Asma believes that with the strong support from the National STEM Centre and Ministry of Education, the module will benefit many teachers and gradually improve STEM education in this country.
