ASM Podcast 37: e-estidotmy Ask A Scientist with Dr Nursalwa Baharuddin
June 12, 2024ASM President’s Regional Visit to Penang
June 12, 2024As the announcement of the SPM results draws near, the Academy of Sciences Malaysia held a dialogue session called “Chit Chat with SPM Leavers: What’s next?” yesterday with the SPM leavers batch 2023. This session, led by ASM Chief Executive Officer Puan Hazami Habib, aimed to acquaint young talents with the prevailing and emerging trends within Malaysia’s Science, Technology, Innovation, and Economy (STIE) ecosystem.
In response to the decline in industry-ready STEM talent in Malaysia, which is essential to meet the increasing demand for tech-skilled workers, Puan Hazami emphasises the importance of SPM leavers selecting university courses that provide future-proof skill sets. She stressed that this careful course selection is vital for preparing students to capitalise on opportunities in the STIE industry over the next 25 to 50 years.
During the session, Puan Hazami highlighted the 10-10 MySTIE framework, which identifies key science and technology drivers such as advanced artificial intelligence (AI), sensor technology, blockchain, and 5G/6G. She stressed that acquiring skills in these areas will be indispensable, not only on a national level but also on a global scale.
The participants asked about the country’s STIE ecosystem and Malaysia’s global standing. They also were curious about how emerging technologies will significantly influence their decisions.
ASM hopes this sharing session will guide young talents in pursuing higher education in STEM fields. ASM anticipates a new generation of STEM professionals who will significantly contribute to the growth and dynamism of the STIE ecosystem.
