ASM Podcast Episode 45 – Malaysian Young Scientists at Lindau
December 30, 2024The Academy of Sciences Malaysia hosted Professor Samuel Myers, Director of the Planetary Health Alliance, for a talk titled “Protecting Human Health by Safeguarding the Planet” on 19 November 2024. Attendees included members of the National Planetary Health Action Plan (NPHAP) Working Group, government representatives, research institutes, and NGOs.
In her opening address, NPHAP Chairperson Academician Professor Emerita Datuk Dr Asma Ismail FASc highlighted the urgent need to integrate diverse knowledge and leverage science, technology, and innovation (STI) to address environmental challenges. She noted a 161% rise in Malaysia’s environmental health-related welfare costs, advocating for community-focused, nature-based solutions driven by STI.
Professor Myers emphasised that the environmental crisis has escalated into a global health and humanitarian crisis, with most disease and mortality in the next century stemming from the degradation of Earth’s life support systems. With six of nine planetary boundaries crossed, he warned of severe health impacts, including malnutrition, disease spread, and mental health issues.
He called for systemic changes in energy, agriculture, urban planning, and governance, underscoring the viability of renewable energy and sustainable practices. Stressing the role of education, he concluded with a hopeful vision of collective action leading to a sustainable and equitable future.
