October 18, 2019Continuing the effort to foster a culture of research integrity in the Malaysian research ecosystem, the Young Scientists Network-Academy of Sciences Malaysia (YSN-ASM) has organised the Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR) Workshop. The Workshop was held in cooperation with Akademi Kepimpinan Pengajian Tinggi (AKEPT) and the Ministry of Education (MOE).
Held from 3 to 6 September 2019 at AKEPT, the Workshop was conducted based on the 10 topics featured in the RCR Module. This Workshop was the fifth of its kind to be organised; similar workshops have been organised in Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT), Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) and Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS).
The Workshop utilises the active learning pedagogy, where case studies, team-based learning, peer-instruction, role-play, etc will be used to deliver the content of the module. This interactive mode of learning will ensure a comprehensive and holistic dialogue on research ethics coupled with robust interdisciplinary discourse on ethical reflexivity will be carried out.
YBhg Datuk Professor Dr Awg Bulgiba Awg Mahmud FASc, Secretary General of ASM was in attendance to officiate the Workshop. He emphasised the importance of this RCR initiative in building a sense of integrity among Malaysian researchers, to build trust among scientists and the community. Building trust is important as the nation need to progressively make an impact through its research publication both on the national and global arena.
The Workshop was participated by 50 participants, and conducted by four instructors, four instructor trainees, two facilitators and two ASM secretariats.
At the end of the Workshop, participants were able to describe the key principles of the 10 RCR topics, appreciate the values and impact of conducting research responsibly, identify the negative consequences of research misconduct and irresponsible conduct of research, as well as to identify the best practices, principles and guidelines on conducting research responsibly.
