Bridging the Gap, Fostering Leadership in Cancer Research
TYAN-YSN International Thematic Workshop
TWAS Young Affiliates Network (TYAN), the Young Scientists Network-Academy of Sciences Malaysia (YSN-ASM) and Higher Education Leadership Academy (AKEPT) have co-organized a TYAN-YSN International Thematic Workshop from 30 October to 1 November 2018.
This year, the sophomoric workshop is titled “Bridging the Gap, Fostering Leadership in Cancer Research”.
According to chairperson of this year’s workshop Dr Cheong Sok Ching, the workshop is a great platform to showcase the recent and ever-evolving developments in cancer research particularly in drug development, precision medicine, and digital technologies.
These developments afford an abundance of opportunities for young scientists to develop their talent and to work together to address the challenges related cancer survival.
Attended by speakers and participants from 16 countries worldwide, the workshop featured several presentations that were divided into themed sessions, such as Drug Development, Precision Medicine as well as Digital Technologies for Cancer Control and Management.
The workshop also featured a panel session that discussed how researchers could keep abreast in a low-resource setting, as technology is advancing rapidly. The discussion featured panelists from Kingston University; London, St George’s Hospital Medical School, London; Chinese Academy of Sciences; YSN-ASM as well as TWAS.
International participants were taken on a trip to visit Cancer Research Malaysia, an independent and non-profit cancer research organisation based in Malaysia. Cancer Research Malaysia conducts research in niche cancers often found in the Asian population.
