ASM Science Journal: Opportunities and Challenges in Date Palm Cultivation in Malaysia
April 22, 2025On 14 March 2025, ASM hosted the National Education Reform (NER) Advisory Roundtable Session, chaired by the Minister of Economy, YB Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli.
The session began with remarks by ASM President, Academician Datuk Dr Tengku Mohd Azzman Shariffadeen FASc, and NER Study Chair, Academician Professor Emerita Datuk Dr Asma Ismail FASc, who outlined key shifts in Malaysia’s education landscape. Their perspectives laid the groundwork for focused discussions on urgent and strategic reforms.
This roundtable discussion aims to gather insights from the advisory group, bringing together diverse expertise and perspectives, leveraging thought leadership in the country to obtain inputs and views on improving the education sector, ecosystem, and outcomes in Malaysia regarding the national education ecosystem.
Through this open, inclusive, and participatory dialogue, the advisory group is expected to provide innovative ideas and forward-thinking strategies to leverage the leadership and move the national education system forward. The refined and consolidated recommendations will be incorporated into the 13th Malaysia Plan.
The Ministry of Economy has entrusted ASM with conducting an extensive study on NER to transform Malaysia’s education system from preschool to post-higher education. Launched in October 2024 and set for completion by September 2025, the study spans the full education continuum, from cradle to grave: covering preschool, primary, secondary, Technical and Vocational Education Training (TVET), higher education and post-higher education (workforce).
Key Emerging Themes
Now at its halfway mark, the study builds on a strong foundation of early regional engagements across Malaysia, including the northern, southern, east coast, Sabah, and Sarawak zones. These sessions highlighted pressing concerns and surfaced innovative ideas for change, many of which will shape the next wave of reform.
Recent Roundtable Discussions with the advisory group reaffirm several core focus areas, such as Purposeful Learning, Curriculum Reform, Teacher Empowerment, Governance Innovation, Youth-Centric Approach and Creation of a Future Ready Society.
Together, these points reinforce a bold and reform-oriented agenda aimed at transforming Malaysia’s education system to meet current and future needs across all stages of learning.
