July 23, 2018The International Science, Technology and Innovation Centre for South-South Cooperation (ISTIC) organised the International Conference on Climate Change Education on 7 to 8 May 2018 at Corus Hotel, Kuala Lumpur.
The conference was held in conjunction with ISTIC’s 10th Anniversary Celebration. It brought together subject matter experts to identify an effective mechanism on how to integrate climate change education into the national education curriculum; identify good practices on climate change education; seek support for teacher training on climate change education based on Inquiry Based Science Education (IBSE); and identify learning resources and good practices that will enhance climate change education.
Dato’ Dr Samsudin Tugiman FASc, Chairman of the ISTIC Governing Board kicked off the conference with his welcome remarks, followed by addresses from several guests of honour: Ambassador of France to Malaysia H.E. Frederic Laplanche; Director of the Regional Science Bureau for Asia and the Pacific Dr Shahbaz Khan representing the Director-General of UNESCO; and Secretary General of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI) Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Azhar bin Hj Yahya representing Minister of MOSTI.
The Special Envoy of President of Seychelles for ASEAN Countries and Director of Regions 20-Asia Pacific, H.E. Nico Barito delivered a Special Address titled “The Role of Regions of Climate Action in Combating Climate Change”.
The conference was divided into four plenary sessions, where experts from international scientific and education organisations delivered their presentations at each session.
The conference was concluded with a panel comprising the moderators from all plenary sessions to deliberate on salient points to come up with a set of recommendations and proposed action plan on how to incentivise intergovernmental institutions, G77 governments, academies, academia, educational stakeholders to work with the Office for Climate Education so as to integrate and implement climate change education in schools on an urgent basis.
