Majlis Sains Negara Meluluskan Pelan Hala Tuju RDICE
June 12, 2024Malaysia is recognised as one of the world’s 17 megadiverse countries due to its rich and diverse ecosystems. We can safeguard these ecological treasures with the quadruple helix approach, uniting academia, industry, government, and civil society. Everyone has a role to play and, therefore, can Be Part of the Plan.
ASM has published books on biodiversity, notable of which are as follows:
Strategic Paper on Precision Biodiversity
By adopting Paper on Precision Biodiversity (PBD), the country will show the world how this first-time-ever approach can more effectively protect the planet and simultaneously deliver socio-economic returns. The vision is for Malaysia to be an informed and inspired nation to value and conserve bioresources while recognising the importance of investment in frontier technologies to protect biodiversity. Responsible and ethical stewardship of our ecosystem and establishing a biodiversity-linked economy supported by sustainably managed biological resources will be driven by precision technologies alongside conventional approaches. Establishing a national genome database to generate economic growth and promote human well-being opens up opportunities for translational research. Efforts powered by 4IR will also attract young tech-savvy talent and proficient human resources.

The Nexus of Biodiversity Conservation and Sustainable Socio-economic Development in Southeast Asia
ASEAN is one of the most biodiverse regions in the world, and its biodiversity is also one of the most threatened. The main goal of this project is to provide strategic recommendations to address biodiversity decline and achieve the 2050 Vision for Biodiversity set out by the Convention of Biological Diversity (CBD).
The project utilised the 8i Nature-Centric Ecosystem Framework as the main foundation to:
(i) analyse the strengths and gaps in the ASEAN biodiversity landscape.
(ii) create strategic measures and recommendations.
The Mega Science Agenda – Biodiversity
This report outlines comprehensive strategies to study and conserve Malaysia’s diverse ecosystems. It focuses on large-scale research initiatives to understand biodiversity’s role in ecological balance, economic sustainability, and human well-being. The agenda integrates scientific research with policy recommendations to foster sustainable development practices that protect natural resources while supporting socio-economic growth.
