The L’Oréal-UNESCO for Women in Science programme is a partnership between L’Oréal-UNESCO Malaysia with the Ministry of Education (MOE) and ASM to award outstanding young women scientists in their field of research and inspiring women scientists of tomorrow.
Since 2006, the L’Oréal-UNESCO Award has since provided more than RM1,000,000 in research grants to 40 outstanding female scientists in the country. In 2018, three outstanding women who are steadily breaking barriers in research and science have been awarded this recognition: Dr Chai Lay Ching, Dr Lam Sze Mun and Dr Norhayati Abdullah.
A chance observation upon the distinct scent of a bacteria commonly associated with food poisoning has led to Dr Chai Lay Ching’s development of biosensors or ‘electro-noses’, enabling real-time detection of harmful bacteria in food via specific scents.
Vice-president of the Malaysian Water Association Dr Norhayati Abdullah’s award-winning research looks into breaking down organic compounds in wastewater from palm oil production into harmless simpler ones that allows the water to be reused be it in plant operations or for irrigation.
Dr Lam Sze Mun walks the talk in providing clean and sustainable energy in Malaysia with her research on treating non-sewage household wastewater via a method that eliminates organic matters while harnessing the energy stored in them.
