AFRASIA Workshop Marks Key Step Towards Asia–Africa STI Collaboration

On 14 May 2026, ASM, through its Young Scientists Network (YSN-ASM), welcomed a courtesy visit by Associate Professor Dr Mürsel Doğrul, President of the Turkish Young Academy of Sciences.
Dr Doğrul was received by YSN-ASM Chair, Professor Ts Dr Mai Chun Wai, alongside members of the Steering Committee. The session, chaired by Ms Dharshene Rajayah, Chief of International Affairs and Communications (CIAC), brought together key representatives, including Associate Professor Dr Anwar PP Abdul Majeed, ChM Dr Shahrul Nizam Ahmad and Assistant Professor Ts Dr Michelle Teo Yee Mun.
The engagement provided an opportunity for meaningful exchanges on science diplomacy, strategic scientific communication and international academic cooperation. Discussions also explored the evolving role of young academies, global scientific engagement and emerging areas such as Artificial Intelligence.
Dr Doğrul was introduced to YSN-ASM’s structured initiatives, showcasing Malaysia’s strong commitment to youth-led science diplomacy and scientific outreach. Both organisations recognised their shared mission to empower young scientists and amplify their collective voice within the science, technology, and innovation landscape.
The visit highlighted the critical role of young academies in fostering cross-border collaboration, strengthening networks and advancing the visibility of early-career researchers globally.
Importantly, the engagement marked the beginning of a promising partnership between YSN-ASM and the Turkish Young Academy of Sciences. Both parties expressed interest in expanding collaboration, particularly in Artificial Intelligence and other emerging scientific fields. The visit also reaffirmed the role of young academies as key platforms for international collaboration, scientific leadership, and global engagement among emerging researchers.
Looking ahead, the upcoming World Science Forum, scheduled to take place in Türkiye in March 2027, was noted as an important platform for advancing global scientific exchange. Malaysia looks forward to participating in the Forum and strengthening engagement with international partners on shared priorities in science, technology and innovation.
