Today, we are witnessing a degradation of nature on a global scale at rates unprecedented in human history. The issue of deteriorating ecological health, evidenced by the wide-ranging threats of global warming, climate change and the current pandemic has gathered attention from many quarters in the world community.
Addressing Planetary Health in a balanced and comprehensive manner is vital for humanity to fulfil its collective role as responsible custodians of the natural environment.
The 36th IdeaXchange that attempted to bridge science and spirituality to achieve planetary health was held on 22 March 2022 via Zoom Webinar.
The session was moderated by Yang Mulia Academician Tengku Datuk Dr Mohd Azzman Shariffadeen FASc, a Senior Fellow at the Academy of Sciences Malaysia.
To acquaint attendees to the relatively novel subject, a scene-setting was carried out by Emeritus Professor Datuk Dr Osman Bakar, Professor and Holder of the Al-Ghazali Chair, International Institute of Islamic Thought and Civilisation.
The panellists for this topic were Professor Ir Dr Ewe Hong Tat FASc (President/CEO of Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) Malaysia), Professor Dr Mahendhiran Sanggaran Nair FASc (Pro Vice Chancellor of Research Engagement and Impact at Sunway University), and Professor Datuk Dr Azizan Baharuddin (Director of Centre for Civilisational Dialogue of Universiti Malaya and UKM-YSD Chair for Sustainability).
The ASM IdeaXchange is a platform to discuss interdisciplinary matters and debate on science, technology, innovation, and economy issues. This is the 36th instalment in the series, which delved into how science and spirituality plays a part in achieving optimal planetary health.
The 36th IdeaXchange is one of the programmes organised under Minggu Sains Negara, brought to you by the Ministry of Science, Technology, and Innovation (MOSTI).
