July 21, 2023In conjunction with International Day of the Tropics, the Mahathir Science Award Foundation (MSAF) organised a webinar that highlighted the latest issues on the Tropics, focusing on Tropical Agriculture, Tropical Architecture & Engineering, Tropical Medicine, and Tropical Natural Resources.
The webinar was moderated by ASM Vice-President Professor Dato’ Ir Dr A Bakar Jaafar FASc, and featured five invited speakers:
- Dr Alexander Tilley, Senior Scientist (WorldFish)
- Professor ir Dr Fatimah Ibrahim FASc, Head of Centre for Innovation in Medical Engineering (Universiti Malaya)
- Dr Georges Snounou, Research Director (Centre national de la recherche scientifique)
- Dr Ar Serina Hijjas, Principal Director (Hijjas Kasturi Association Sdn Bhd)
- Professor Susan Page, Professor of Physical Geography (University of Leicester)
The webinar celebrated the extraordinary diversity of the Tropics while highlighting the unique challenges and opportunities faced by nations of the Tropics.
Experts in academia and industry has touched on the four main tracks: Tropical Agriculture, Tropical Architecture & Engineering, Tropical Medicine, and Tropical Natural Resources.
The discussions covered:
- Emerging Technologies for Food Security and Sustainable Livelihoods in the Tropics
- Ecology and Architecture of the Future
- Point of Care Medical Devices in Early Detection and Treatment of Tropical Diseases
- First Malaria Vaccine: RTS,S/Mosquirix
- Importance of Tropical Peatlands and Directions for Responsible Management.
