July 24, 2023Malaysian Student Sole Representative in CERN Summer Student Programme 2023
Universiti Malaya student Vincent Tee Ming Han was selected as the sole representative of Malaysia in the CERN Summer Student Programme (CSSP) this year.
CSSP offers practical training to physics, computing, engineering, and mathematics undergraduate students from across the world to join research teams and participate in experiments at the CERN facility in Geneva, Switzerland. CERN is the world’s largest particle physics laboratory.
Vincent Tee, a Bachelor of Science (Physics) student at Universiti Malaya, has the chance to meet young scientists from around the world who will share their knowledge on various topics in particle physics and computing, both in theory and experimentation. Vincent Tee will be spending eight to thirteen weeks at CERN, starting 3 July 2023.
“I am very grateful to MOSTI and ASM for providing Malaysian students with the opportunity to participate in programmes like CSSP. This is a dream come true for me, as it allows me to meet world-renowned researchers in particle physics. It is a stepping-stone towards my aspirations of becoming a particle physicist and contributing to advancing this field in Malaysia. I am truly grateful for the chance to embark on this incredible journey at CSSP,” said Vincent Tee.
“The opportunity for students to participate in programmes like CSSP is a highly valuable experience as it exposes them to a dynamic research environment. Students can also share knowledge and ideas while engaging in challenging experiments and projects. This experience will certainly open up their potential to become excellent researchers and then utilise the knowledge to help advance the lives of the community,” remarked Minister of MOSTI, YB Tuan Chang Lih Kang.
Meanwhile, the President of ASM and Science, Technology and Innovation Advisor to the YAB Prime Minister and the Nation, Academician Datuk Dr Tengku Mohd Azzman Shariffadeen FASc, said, “The involvement of students in the CSSP will foster excellence in young researchers to produce internationally recognised research. It also allows them to communicate directly with leading scientists and build a wider collaboration network. This experience will undoubtedly have a significant impact on their career development in the field of science and technology.”
The nomination for the CSSP has been open annually to all public and private higher learning institutions nationwide since 2012. Until now, 23 students from Malaysia have been sent to participate in the programme. ASM is responsible for the initial screening of candidates for Malaysia, while the CSSP committee decides the final screening and selection. CSSP fully funds all students to attend this programme.
All participating students will engage in sessions, including visits to the CERN facility, discussions, and various physics, computing, engineering, and mathematics workshops. Students are also required to prepare a short report on their involvement in the CSSP at the end of the programme.
