May 15, 2018“Luaskan Inovasimu” was the theme carried by this year’s Minggu Sains Negara, held at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Agama Segamat in Johor from 3 to 7 April 2018.
The Johor state level programme was officiated by YB Datuk Haji Ayub bin Rahmat, Chairperson of the Johor State Health and Environment, Education and Information Committee.
Minggu Sains Negara Johor State Level 2018 was organised by the Academy of Sciences Malaysia (ASM) with the cooperation of the Department of Economic Planning (UPEN) Johor.
This programme is part of a nationwide effort to increase the public’s awareness on the importance of science and to close the gap between science and society through various interactive and attractive science-based activities.
The five-day event featured various STEM-related activities that engages visitors of all age and background: various exhibitions held by ASM as well as collaborators such as Petrosains and Universiti Teknologi Malaysia enabled visitors to have first-hand experience in witnessing science in daily life.
To promote Inquiry Based Science Education (IBSE) among teachers, a workshop on IBSE was held for teachers to educate them on interesting teaching methods for STEM subjects. Meanwhile, the students’ STEM knowledge and creativity were put to the test through a Student Innovation Competition.
In an effort to bring science closer to the hearts of the public, “Sembang Sains” featured four speakers that presented topics such as Susah Ke Sains?, Luaskan Kuasamu, Dengan Sains!, Wanita Dalam Sains and Islam dan Sains.
A session called Science Café JB was also held in conjunction with Minggu Sains Negara that was organised by the Young Scientists Network-Academy of Sciences Malaysia (YSN-ASM).
A public health programme in the form of a dental check-up was organised by the local health clinic to promote dental health and hygiene among visitors. In addition, visitors had the chance to win attractive prizes such as smartphones and an electronic bicycle through the Lucky Draw.
