June 4, 2018Stadium Batu Pahat bore witness to the inaugural STEM Up Challenge held on 24 April 2018. This programme was organised by the Chemical Company of Malaysia Berhad (CCM) in collaboration with the Academy of Sciences Malaysia (ASM).
Six schools emerged as top scorers during the Semi Final Round of STEM Up Challenge 2018, which qualified them to the Final Round. The Semi Final Round consists of three concurrent parts: a group quiz comprising 45 multiple-choice questions; a three-minute science project presentation; and an ad-hoc science project.
The Final Round of STEM Up Challenge 2018 utilised the Kahoot Interactive System Format of a computer-based quiz of 25 STEM-related questions to be answered in 25 minutes.
Ultimately, SMK (P) Temenggong Ibrahim defeated five other schools to emerge as the Champion during the Final Round of STEM Up Challenge 2018.
SMK (P) Temenggong Ibrahim won RM5,000 cash prize and a 3D Printer; first runner up SMK Tinggi Batu Pahat brought home RM3,000 and astronomy telescope; second runner up SMK Dato’ Seth received RM2,000 and a planetarium projector.
The fourth, fifth and sixth place winners were SMK Dato Onn Jaafar, SMK Yong Peng and SMK Seri Gading, respectively. Meanwhile, the award for the Best Science Project was awarded to SMK Seri Gading.
Prior to the Semi Final and Final Round, the STEM Up Challenge held a Preliminary Science Quiz from 2 to 3 April 218. The Preliminary Quiz was participated by 1,500 students from 29 schools in the Batu Pahat district, and was organised in conjunction with the Johor State Level of Minggu Sains Negara.
Viewing the STEM Up Challenge’s roaring success, Nik Fazila binti Nik Mohamed Shihabuddin, Group Managing Director of CCM mentioned in her speech that the STEM Up Challenge will be continued with ASM’s continued collaboration; the next STEM Up Challenge was planned to be held during Minggu Amanah Saham Negara next year.
