Professor Ir Ts Dr Zainuddin Abd Manan’s area of expertise is in chemical engineering sciences, particularly in resource conservation of energy, water and material. His leadership in his field and university, especially in developing and commercialising software solutions that promoted industrial symbiosis is highly commendable. His work has benefited the industries that he worked with. He has led his team to champion energy, water and resource sustainability via process Integration and Process System Engineering (PSE) Solution in Malaysia, ASEAN and beyond, over three decades. This has led to the establishment of the UTM Process Systems Engineering Centre (PROSPECT) in 2007. He and his team steered PROSPECT to develop and commercialise cutting-edge technologies and solutions for maximising savings of water, energy, power and resources for industries or faculties based on Pinch Analysis concepts that promote industrial symbiosis. The success of PROSPECT led to the establishment of OPTIMISE, a spin-off company that takes PROSPECT R&D products, services and know-how to the market and lead the commercialisation of innovative PSE solutions. He has completed over 100 R&D consultancy projects and has filed 25 patents/copyrights. He has published over 200 refereed journals and 230 conference papers on energy and resource conservation. His H-index 36 (Scopus) is with a citation of 4,531. Professor Ir Ts Dr Zainuddin is ranked second globally by Elsevier’s SciVal spotlight in energy optimisation, heat integration and water minimisation (2011-2014). He was appointed as the project director to develop the Green Technology Blueprint for the 57 OIC Countries in 2013. He won the Saudi’s Prince Sultan International Prize for Water in 2008. He was appointed as Chair of the Institution of Chemical Engineering (IChemE) Global Award (2013-2020), Chair of Malaysia Energy Efficiency and Conservation Act Drafting Committee and the Technical Advisor for Malaysia Green Technology Corporation. He also served as a Vice-Chairman of the Board of Judges of the ASEAN Energy Award (2006-2011). He founded and spearheaded the UTM Sustainable Energy Management Initiative that led UTM to achieve over USD6 mil energy savings between 2011 and 2018 and won the ASEAN Energy Award in 2012. In his capacity as Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ir Ts Dr Zainuddin founded the UTM Synergy 4.0, a transformation programme that consolidated 18 subdiscipline-based faculties into seven faculties based on UTM thrust areas.
