Professor Dato’ Ts Dr Aziz Deraman’s area of expertise is in Computer Science, particularly in Software Engineering. He was responsible for developing the Software Testing Standards for the country, which is currently being used. This achievement led to his appointment as the Chairman of Decision Committee for Software Certification Scheme for Malaysian Software Testing Board (MSTB) since 2015. He has authored 14 books and chapters and published more than 100 journals and 150 proceedings at the national and international level. His H-index is 7 (SCOPUS) with a citation of 275.
Apart from this, he has conducted more than 25 research projects, and among his notable projects were the development of agriculture and e-community portals (Taninet), UKM Information System (Student, Financial and Human Resource Systems), ITHHO Information System, KUSZA Information Systems, IT Strategic Report for the State of Terengganu, and Benefits and Monitoring Education System for MOE. He also contributed as a consultant in ICT project like e-Ketengah (KETENGAH), Infodesa (KPLB), e-WargaKota (DBKL), and as ICT Project Auditor for Terengganu, e-Book Study. He was also the technical advisor for the development of the Hospital Information System (C-HeTS) of Hospital UKM.
Professor Dato’ Ts Dr Aziz serves in MQA to ensure that IHLs adhere to MQA Guidelines, particularly in relation to IT and Software Engineering. He has helped the Government in improving the digital divide to the underserved and B40 community in various states, including Selangor, Sabah, Sarawak and Terengganu. He sits on the Board of Director of Yayasan Pembangunan Ekonomi Islam Malaysia (YPEIM), where he consulted to develop a system called e-jariah. He has also consulted in developing a digital program called Bestari.com, a community centre website to help the rural community in Terengganu.
He has served UMT at various level of administrative responsibilities, such as the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (2007-2009), Vice-Chancellor (2009-2012) and Dean, School of Informatics and Applied Mathematics (2013). Prior to this, he also served as Deputy Dean at Faculty of Computer and Maths, UKM (1992-1995FF), Deputy Director of Computer Centre, UKM (1995FF-2001) and Dean of Faculty of Information Science and Technology, UKM (2001-2007).
He has participated in various technology networks in the USA, Asia (Indonesia, Japan, Thailand, Singapore, etc.). He is a member of 3COM's Technical Advisory Council (TAC) USA in (1996-1998) which he participated in various areas of computer networks technology and implementation at the technical advisory level. He was also invited as a Panel for Sub-Regional Dialogues on the National Institutional Changes for Education 2030 in Indonesia (2019) to promote best practices in the use of ICT in Tourism for Sustainability.
