Dato’ DR.R.Ratnalingam ( A brief CV) He joined USM as a lecturer in 1970 after completing his Doctorate at the University of Oxford and was a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford (first Malaysian Rhodes Scholar). He was a Federal Scholar for his undergraduate studies at University of Malaya, where he was a direct entry student to second year. During his career at USM he rose from lecturer to Professor and Dean of the School of Physics. He has also been a Senior Fulbright Scholar and visiting Professor at the University of Ohio, U.S.A. He has also been a visiting Professor at the University of Waterloo in Canada and the University of Wollongong in Australia. He was invited under various Fellowships to Research Centres in U.K., Japan and France. He was with USM for 27 years. Professor Ratnalingam was awarded the P.K.T in 1986 and the D.S.P.N in 1998 by the State of Penang. After retiring from USM he became the Foundation President of the Penang Medical College working with the Irish Medical Institutions to establish the Medical School. He was awarded an Honorary Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Ireland. He retired from the College after serving for 11 years. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Physics (U.K.) and was made a Foundation Fellow of the Malaysian Academy of Science. He served in a number of committees of various National Government bodies and in the State of Penang. In USM he was also the Director of the Industrial Research and Innovation Centre. This involved coordinating and collaborating University Research with Industries. His research papers were mainly on Low Temperature Physics, Thin Films and Solar Energy He represented Malaysia and the States of Penang and Selangor at Cricket and was the National Captain at the First World Cup in U.K. in 1979. He was also selected as the cricketer of the year at the National Sports man Award 1979. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame for Cricket. He was the President of the Penang Hockey Association in 1971. He also served as the Honorary Consul for Sweden and the Kingdom of Norway for Penang and North Malaya from 2004 to 2015. He was awarded the Commander of the Royal Order of the Polar Star by King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden at the Royal Palace at Stockholm in 2015. He was also awarded Knight First Class of the Royal Norwegian Order of Merit by the Ambassador on behalf of King Harald VI of Norway.
