Emeritus Professor Datuk Dr Osman Bakar is a renowned scholar and researcher in the history and philosophy of science. He has held professorial positions at four different academic institutions in three countries, including Universiti Brunei Darussalam (Brunei), Prince Al-Waleed Center for Muslim-Christian Understanding at Georgetown University (Washington DC), International Institute of Islamic Thought and Civilisation (ISTAC) at International Islamic University Malaysia and University of Malaya, making him one of the most influential scholars that Malaysia has produced. In 1995, Datuk Dr Osman was the founder of the Center for Civilizational Dialogue at the University of Malaya. He has served as an advisor and consultant to various international academic and professional organisations and institutions, including UNESCO and The Qatar Foundation. In addition, he was a member of C-100 (Council of 100 Leaders), of The West-Islamic World Initiative for Dialogue established by the World Economic Forum based in Switzerland. Datuk Dr Osman is bestknown for his work in Tawhid and Science (A History and Philosophy of Islamic Science), Classification of Knowledge in Islam, and Islam and Civilisational Dialogue, translated into various languages such as Persian, Turkish, Indonesian, and Albanian. Several of his other writings have also been translated into Spanish, Chinese, Urdu, Arabic, and Bosnian. He has published more than 100 journal articles with over 2,000 citations with an H-index of 22 and is the author of more than 40 books and a dozen titles in the encyclopaedia on Islamic thought and civilisation, particularly Islamic philosophy and science, Islam in Southeast Asia, and intercultural dialogues. He was also a recipient of Fulbright Visiting Scholar at Harvard University in 1992. In 2009, Datuk Dr Osman was included in Malaysia’s twenty leading intellectuals and the 500 most influential Muslims globally.
