Datin Paduka Setia Dato’ Dr Aini Ideris, a renowned scientist in Avian Medicine, has main research area in the control of avian respiratory and immunosuppressive diseases, and development of poultry vaccines, which led to the commercialisation of Newcastle disease and tissue culture adapted fowl pox vaccines, in 1995 and 1996 respectively, one of the first example of technology transfer from the university to the industry. These two vaccines have been registered and sold in nearly 20 countries. In 2005 and 2015, her team commercialised two other important poultry vaccines, where she was the co-reseacher. Dr Aini won various awards nationally and internationally. Among them are, the prestigious National Academia Award 2010 (AAN), under the category of Innovation and Commercialisation of Products, for her successful innovation and commercialisation of the Newcastle disease vaccine (NDV4-UPM), Top 10 researchers for National Innovation Award 2012, one of the Top Research Scientists for Malaysia (TRSM) in 2013, Tokoh Pekerja Wanita, CUEPACs (2019), and Best CEO in Public Sector (2019) at the National Award on Occupational Safety & Health. At international level, she received MATSUDA Award by the International Society for South East Asian Agricultural Sciences (2018), CHT Pursuit of Excellence Award (2020), and Millennium Academic Achievement Award (2020). The pinnacle of her success in 2013 was when she was inducted as one of the Inaugural Members of the Hall of Honour, by the World Veterinary Poultry Association (WVPA) for her contributions to scientific research, poultry education and training, poultry health systems and for her outstanding leadership qualities. This is one of the prestigious recognitions accorded by the Avian Veterinary Fraternity worldwide to outstanding recipients. In 2015, she was elected as the Vice President of WVPA, the first Asian to be appointed to the position. As a distinguished scientist, Dr Aini was elected as a Fellow of Academy of Sciences Malaysia (FASc) in 2009, Fellow of the Islamic World Academy of Sciences (FIAS) in 2011, and one of the Founding Fellows of the Malaysian College of Veterinary Specialists (FMCVS) in 2011. Dr Aini has a long administrative experience. She served as the 8th Vice-Chancellor of Universiti Putra Malaysia (2016-2020), Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic and International) (2008-2013), Chairman of Malaysian Deputy Vice-Chancellor’s Committee (Academic and International) (2012-13), Dean, School of Graduate Studies (2001-2008), and Deputy Dean, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine UPM (1992-2001). Dr Aini is actively involved in many committees at the national and international levels, as Council member, Chairperson or Executive Committee member. She is currently the Pro-Chancellor of the International Medical University (IMU) since March 2021.
