Professor Dato’ Ir Dr Kamal Nasharuddin Bin Mustapha was born on 8 June 1962 in Machang, Kelantan. He completed his secondary education at Mara Junior Science College, Kota Bharu. Later, he continued his ‘A’ Level study at Kelsterton College of Technology, Wales. After earning his Bachelor in Civil and Structural Engineering from University of Sheffield, UK in 1984, he pursued his studies at Heriot-Watt University, Scotland and obtained a Master’s Degree in 1986 in the field of Structural Engineering. In 1994, Professor Dato’ Kamal retains a stated passion for higher education transformation, interdisciplinary research and communicating his own enthusiasm for science and scholarship as a whole to the public, he obtained his PhD from University of Aston, UK in Structural-Fire Engineering. Being a strong advocate of lifelong learning and wholesome knowledge-seeking scholar, Professor Dato’ Kamal has also completed his Postgraduate Diploma in Syariah at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia and ASEAN Senior Management Development Program under Harvard Business School. Professor Dato’ Kamal is currently the Vice-Chancellor of University Tenaga Nasional (UNITEN), a Council Member of MARA (Government Agency), a member of the Engineering Accreditation Council (EAC), Chairman of the Vice-Chancellor Council for Private Universities (VCCPU), Deputy Chairman of Government-Linked Universities (GLU) and also a member of Ministry of Higher Education – Private Institutions of Higher Learning Council. His research interest is in the area of reinforced concrete columns in fire, building forensic, cylindrical shell, flat slab, cold formed channel columns and pretensioned inverted t-beams with circular web openings. Additionally, since the mid-2000s he is involved in a research dealing with statistical model, optimization and safety assessment in workplace.
