Science Café Johor Bahru has organised a virtual Science Café JB session with Dr Nurbiha A. Shukor titled “What if the World Goes Online Learning?” on 29 May 2020. Dr Nurbiha is a senior lecturer at the Faculty of Science and Humanities, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia. She is also currently the Manager of Creative Multimedia and Learning Technologies at UTM.

Dr Chai Lay Ching and Dr Nadiah Ghazali joined PETROSAINS Science Facilitator Ms Norhayati Zulkifli at the PETROSAINS STEM Live on 20 May 2020 via Facebook Live and YouTube Live. PETROSAINS STEM Live is created as a space for discussions with STEM experts to discuss current issues from the point of view of STEM. It provides interesting and relevant information that is useful for everyone.

This webinar served to remind Malaysians of our past and current successes as well as provoke thought on the potential for leadership roles for Malaysia to play.

ASM FAScinate™ Series

In conjunction with the ASM’s 25th Anniversary, this new concept of FAScinate™ is not limited to the lecture style. The new branding of more casual talk aims to engage with more public and fascinate them with science. Featuring the tagline “Open Minds, Spark Ideas” in which through the series of talk, it will become a platform for ASM Fellows to share their thoughts and knowledge that will open the minds of people and spark new ideas. This session featured four ASM Fellows: Professor Dato’ Dr Balwant Singh Gendeh FASc, Dato’ Professor Emeritus Dr Hashim Yaacob FASc, Professor Dr Zainal Abidin Talib FASc and Professor Ir Dr Lee Sze Wei FASc.

The 33rd ASM IdeaXchange was held on 26 June 2020 with the title Structural Changes in the Global Economy: Building an Agile and Resilient Malaysian Science, Technology, Innovation, and Economy (STIE) Ecosystem. The session featured Professor Dr Mahendhiran Sanggaran Nair FASc, ASM Fellow and Vice President of Research & Development at Monash University Malaysia and was moderated by ASM Vice President YM Tengku Datuk Dr. Mohd Azzman Shariffadeen Tengku Ibrahim FASc.

YSN-ASM Science Café Johor | Hand Sanitiser: Fake or Genuine?

The Young Scientists Network-Academy of Sciences Malaysia (YSN-ASM) Science Café is a programme that aims to bring science to the public. Viewing its success in the Central Region of Peninsular Malaysia, the programme has since spread its wings to the southern region with the Science Café Johor. Science Café Johor is hosted via Zoom by Dr Jaysuman Pusppanathan and broadcasted via Facebook Live. This episode featured ChM Dr Shahrul Nizam Ahmad from the School of Chemistry and Environment, Faculty of Applied Sciences, Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM).

People and Mangroves In celebration of the International Day of the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystem

In conjunction with the International Day of the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystem, the Mahathir Science Award Foundation (MSAF) and the Academy of Sciences Malaysia (ASM) jointly organised a webinar themed ‘People and Mangroves’ on 28 July 2020. The webinar provided an overview of the latest scientific findings and conservation efforts of mangroves. Three representatives from local communities who directly depend on mangroves for their livelihoods also shared their precious and colourful experiences.

Challenging Inequality Malaysian Young Scientist Promotes Equality in the Engineering Community

The 11th International Forum of NGOs in official partnership with UNESCO took place at the UNESCO Headquarters in Paris, France, on the theme “Challenging Inequalities”, with a focus on areas such as youth, income, technology, gender, and education. The forum was organised by the NGO-UNESCO Liaison Committee in close cooperation with the UNESCO Secretariat.

Webinar Sessions in Celebration of International Youth Day

In conjunction with International Youth Day, the Mahathir Science Award Foundation (MSAF) and the Academy of Sciences Malaysia (ASM) jointly organised two webinars themed “Youth for the Tropics” on 12 and 13 August 2020. The webinars aimed to create awareness among youths in the tropics of the issues vital to them and celebrate youths who have made valuable contributions through science, policy engagement and social entrepreneurship in solving problems of the tropics.
