2020 YSN-ASM Chrysalis Award Grand Final Pitch

The YSN-ASM Chrysalis Award was formerly known as the YSN-ASM Rising Star Award in 2019. This award is targeted specifically at final-year Malaysian PhD students. The award aims to identify and nurture promising PhD candidates to become future pillars of our Science, Technology, and Innovation ecosystem. Selected finalists will also experience continued support and mentoring for the next five years. This step is to ensure that these finalists are groomed to be outstanding researchers who will contribute towards Malaysia’s STI ecosystem.

The COVID-19 pandemic has brought the aviation industry to its knees as national borders have been closed to contain the spread of the coronavirus, which has resulted in the grounding of thousands of aircraft globally. Airlines not already bankrupt are tottering on the brink. In relation to this, the ASM Science & Technology Development Industry Discipline Group (ASM STDI) in collaboration with Malaysian Industry-Government Group for High Technology (MIGHT) organised a webinar to highlight the issue of the aviation industry in Malaysia.

Creation, Nature & Life from Quantum Science Perspectives Online talk by Professor Dr Raymond Ooi FASc

On 26 March 2021, Professor Dr Raymond Ooi FASc conducted an online talk that provided an insight to creation, nature and life from the perspectives of quantum science. Through his online talk, Dr Raymond hoped that viewers will be able to open and elevate their mindset and for them to be able to see nature of things from a new perspective. He also hoped that his talk would make viewers understand the way of nature and universal values as well as to cultivate their mind and soul to manifest a brighter future.

TropSc Webinar Series: Naming Nature 2

In 2017, a Naming Nature workshop gathered some of Malaysia’s most experienced taxonomists with a group of young, enthusiastic researchers. They clamoured for a system to better handle identification, digitisation and communication within the community. However, these issues still remain unresolved. Therefore, a webinar with the same title was held to invite further discussions on crafting a future path to address these problems for Malaysia, including taxonomic challenges, specimen digitisation and data stewardship.

MSG-Phobia: A Consequence of Flawed Science

In this Science Café session, Mr Shawn Keng is joined by ChM Dr Fatimah Salim from UiTM, who will be debunking the oft-misunderstood element of flavouring that enriches our tastebuds: monosodium glutamate (MSG). Although we generally know MSG as a common flavour enhancer, but what exactly is it? Dr Fatimah introduced MSG to viewers from a scientific standpoint. It is the sodium salt of glutamic acid, which readily dissolves in solution to sodium and glutamic acid.

International Space Webinar | Can New Space Deliver on Its Promise?

Following the success of the previous webinar, the ASM STDI Discipline Group has organised another webinar on 12 April 2021. The webinar was to discuss the evolution of the space industry or as it is known, New Space. New Space, broadly defined as a field where traditional and non-traditional space players engage to enable the development of space flight, space applications and space activities at a faster and cheaper rate. Despite the many successful and innovative initiatives from this new approach, there are many technological, legal, regulatory and financial issues which persist.

26th ASM Annual General Meeting | Presidential Address

Continuing to harness technology’s prevalence in the age of COVID-19, the 26th Annual General Meeting of the Academy of Sciences Malaysia was held on 24 April 2021. The event was attended by 224 Fellows alongside the thought leader’s management team. This number surpassed last year’s attendance, exhibiting that the scientific think tank’s members are embracing the convenience and ease of use offered by the virtual conference platform.
