Looking Beyond COVID-19 Vaccination

Around 500,000 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine were administered in the first phase of the vaccination programme in Malaysia (at the time of broadcast). The next phase will prioritise the elderly, people with comorbidities as well as those with disabilities. Dr Aizati Athirah moderated this Science Café session on looking beyond the COVID-19 vaccination. She was joined by Dr Leow Chiuan Yee from Universiti Sains Malaysia and Dr Irene Looi from Hospital Seberang Jaya, Pulau Pinang.

Launch of the
Malaysian Code of Responsible Conduct in Research

The second edition of the Malaysian Code of Responsible Conduct in Research (MCRCR) was launched on 29 March 2021. The launch occurred during the inaugural YSN-ASM International Scientific Virtual Conference 2021. The MCRCR was launched by Datuk Haji Ahmad Amzad Bin Hashim, Deputy Minister of Science, Technology And Innovation. According to Datuk Haji Ahmad Amzad, the MCRCR is crucial to boosting and safeguarding Malaysia’s science and research endeavours. “Adherence and compliance with the code will ensure that research in Malaysia is pursued earnestly and honestly, with integrity and accountability,” he continued. The code will also help convince peers, research enterprises and funders that research ethics are well-entrenched in Malaysia.

TropSc Webinar Series | World Ocean Day: Ocean Life and Livelihoods in the Tropics

The Ocean covers over 70% of the planet and 76% of the Tropics is Ocean. It is our life source, supporting humanity’s sustenance and that of every other organism on Earth. The Ocean produces at least 50% of the planet’s oxygen, is home to most of Earth’s biodiversity, and is the main source of protein for more than a billion people around the world. An estimated 40 million people will be employed by ocean-based industries by 2030.

TropSc Webinar Series | International Day of the Tropics: Together for the Tropics

Leading up to the International Conference of Tropical Sciences (TropSc 2021) with the theme of “The Future Belongs to The Tropics”, the Mahathir Science Award Foundation (MSAF) together with the Academy of Sciences Malaysia successfully organised its 12th webinar titled “Together for the Tropics”. This webinar was conducted in conjunction with the International Day of Tropics that is celebrated worldwide on 29 June annually, as a way to appreciate the unique diversity of the Tropics as well as addressing challenges and opportunities in tropical regions.

2021 National Science Challenge
Preliminary Round Result Announcement

The Preliminary Level of the 2021 National Science Challenge has run its course. The top 79 teams have been identified and was announced on 22 July 2021. The 2021 NSC is organised in collaboration with strategic partners such as the Ministry of Education Malaysia, Majlis Amanah Rakyat (MARA), Collaborative Research in Engineering, Science and Technology Centre, or CREST for short, and the Malaysian Society for Microbiology. The excellent Young Scientists Network-ASM was on board to strategise the concept and content of NSC, while Sasbadi Online Sdn Bhd acted as the technology partner.

FAScinate™ Talk Series

FAScinate is a play on the word “Fascinate” combined with the abbreviation of the title for Academy of Sciences Malaysia Fellows (FASc). Befitting the title itself, this programme features new ASM Fellows who will fascinate and educate the audience with insights into the Fellow’s expertise and experience. Previously called ASM Fellows’ Lecture Series, the rebranding of this intellectual series follows ASM’s 25th Anniversary. FAScinate features a renewed format, transitioning from a formal lecture style into a more casual engagement that is hoped to garner more public interest in science.

12 August 2021 marks the International Youth Day that is celebrated annually to celebrate young people’s voices, actions and spark meaningful engagement from youths across the globe. In line with this year’s official theme from the UN, “Transforming Food Systems: Youth Innovation for Human and Planetary Health”, the Mahathir Science Award Foundation, the Academy of Sciences Malaysia and the International Science Council Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific has organised the 13th webinar in the “Future Belongs to the Tropics” series, titled “Youth Innovation For Human And Planetary Health” as one of the pre-conference events for the International Conference of Tropical Sciences (TropSc 2021).

Transcending the Arts and Sciences

A webinar titled “Transcending the Arts and Sciences” was held on 28 August 2021 under the banner of the ASM ArtScience™ initiative. A welcome remark was delivered by Ar Hijjas Kasturi, co-chair of the 2020 ASM ArtScience™ Prize Task Force. A sharing session was then conducted with the winners of the 2020 ASM ArtScience™ Prize, moderated by Academician Emerita Professor Dato’’ Seri Dr Mazlan Othman FASc.

TropSc Webinar Series | Joyful Chaos in the Tropics

On 3 September 2021, as part of the pre-conference webinar series “The Future Belongs to The Tropics” leading up to the International Conference of Tropical Sciences (TropSc 2021), the Mahathir Science Award Foundation (MSAF) together with the Academy of Sciences Malaysia (ASM) successfully hosted a public discourse on the “joyful chaos” of cities in the Tropics. The speaker of the discourse, Gaétan Siew, past President of the International Union of Architects and UN-Habitat Special Envoy, shared his views on the unique characters of tropical cities. Professor Dato’ Seri Dr Mazlan Othman (Chair of TropSc 2021), started the webinar with her welcoming remarks, sharing her view that the “chaos” arisen from transition in tropical cities can eventually to lead to creativity and growth.
